A little more progress. A barrier across the cab entry and siderods fitted. I need to source a window moulding as my spares are already allocated to other projects. I would have preferred black wheels and rods but the red will suffice. The drive block is a very early model dating from around 1970.
Further progress. Due the loco will not be run with tender wheel pickups, I felt it essential that the pilot truck wheels have pickups. An LGB pickup was cutdown and fitted to the truck. There is very little space available so the pickup required drastic alteration. Locomotive operation is now more than acceptable, running extremely smoothly at very low power settings (less than 3 volts).
Tim,
There is no doubt that the additional Tanks Transform the looks of Stainz. Something that I may consider for one myself at some stage. The pilot added also transforms the look considerably. Thanks for remembering the insertion of your Phots. Certainly does make life easier. Look forward to more now that the surplus Hatches are gone. I have to say one of my reasons for not using Stainz too much is the poor running. You sound to have nailed the problem.
Not sure why, but a friend of mine calls his Herbert. Takes all sorts I guess.

With spare parts becoming difficult to source and needing a few grabrails, I decided to build my own. A length of sprue from one of my son`s military kits was sourced and glued inside the original grabrail mount hole. The hole was then drilled 1.5 mm and a brass grabrail fitted.
Also, wishing some shorter length rolling stock to run with the loco I took an old Aristo `1996` commemorative gondola and cut about 5 inches from the length and lowered the height of the gondola sides. One day it will get painted.
That's why I like your current mindset. I like watching big steam, diesel and electrics run, but I keep coming back to field type stuff. I have beaucoup field type rolling stock and maybe ten or so average sized LGB freight cars. When I'm in a field railway mood, thats what I run. Other times I want to run larger equipment, so I break out the 2085 and the 2095 and pull the larger rolling stock. I don't have a particular theme to my railway, but I fully understand and admire those that do.
like what you have done there tim,,, with the overhanging roof i think it would look good with a proper bunker and trailing wheel, but it looks so much better,, almost cuban,,,,
