LGB Saxon IIK....?

I reckon the fireman would prefer a Fairlie too as he only has one fire to worry about ;)
Actually only the very first Double Fairlies had the one firebox and they had trouble steaming. It was assumed the blasts from the two blastpipes interfered with each other resulting in a poor fire.
The first Ffestiniog Fairlie was one of, if not the, first to use two fireboxes.
Also some of them were fitted with a Spooner patent gizmo that gave the drivers the choice of separate or combined regulators. This was soon removed as separate regulators proved much better at controlling slips. Indeed I recall one double engine driver saying that he used "top engine" to clean the rails and "bottom engine" to haul the train.

On the wikipedia photos can someone tell me what is the function of the cable strung from the front to the back of the cab is.
thanks
Mike

seeing this loco has given me some thoughts what to do with several battery powered 2075's i have, might pair one with a 2075 and make a freelance double loco?
any thoughts?

Looks the best of the photos I have seen to date.

Took delivery of my new Saxon 11k yesterday so here we go answering some of your questions. Firstly the two units are articulated and are connected with a dedicated coupling there is also electrical connection. The two locos are known as A and B the roof mouldings are different which makes them easy to tell apart. Unit A will run independantly of B but B will not run on its own. My loco is fitted with a Massoth sound unit makes you wonder where they got the recording from but never the less it is very good with a double chuff to reflect the design of the running gear. Cosmetically the valve gear protrudes from under the sidetanks and looks a little odd from above or in frontal mode all said though MLGB have made a better job of modelling the 11k than I ever could and the paint colour is better than LGB would have done. Finally many thanks to Peter at Chalk GR who supplied the loco.

I have to say,
this loco is just .....strange to my eye

however, what i love about it is that it is unique,
when i look at the side profile,
in terms of the worldd's lcomotives,
its wonderful, because it is rather unique

and, i have to praise LGB , for they have, as in the past, modeled not the most sought after, commom, popular models, but again, produced something special in the world of railroads

and, should i read good reviews, i shall likely buy one, and, i have nothing else to run with this loco, nor does it seem a good fit, but its just ....appealing in the same way a zeppelin is to my eye.

right now i see this loco, non sound, listed at a competitive seller for just over $1100.00 US
at that price i will need to be impressed with the loco in hand-

I like the perfectly cloned drivers, Paul - you'll have to say that your line has a policy of only employing identical twins to run the IIK.... :rolf:

Nice to see that somebody actually has one, will look forward to hearing how it performs. I have a pair of IKs now, but they are a green one and a black one!

Jon.

PS: mention of twins reminds me of a slightly naughty joke - a chap talking to a mate in the pub, slips into the conversation that he's dating twins! Intrigued, the mate asks if he's ever got them mixed up - to which the chap replies "No, how could I? Jane is a blonde, and George has a beard....." :rolf::rolf::rolf:

Hat, coat, door etc.

nicely done matey ..

Looks great Paul. Look forward to seing it on your hills. Instant double header!

Yes I bought one or two depends on your viewpoint it is fitted with a massoth sound unit which has made it somewhat expensive but I like it because it is quirky and I like the unusual

Somehow it looks a little nicer in your piccies Paul but still not my cup of tea.

But mate if you like it, if it floats your boat, and makes you a happy bunny, then nice one. Enjoy :thumbup:

A model like this presumably has two motors. But what if one motor is more powerful than the other?
Its no different to all the other two motored locos out there. the mallets, mayers, shays, and a lot of the deisels and electrics. Doesn't seem to be a problem. I would assume that most motors of a reasonable standard are going to be pretty much similar.

Really no different from any other two-motored LGB loco: Meyers, Mallets, Whizzy-BoBos, Crocs, every loco with a powered tender, and many more. All these have two independent motors each with their own drive train, just the same as the back-to-back IIK, and they all run fine - in fact the only ones that need some electronic tweaking to avoid speed differences seem to be some of the tender locos like the Frank S, where the tender can run faster than the loco without the equalisation gubbins....

Jon.

Edit: Snap! Posted same time as Stockers!

Nice to see one purchased by a forum member!
Jon - I don't recall you sharing a photo of the IK? I have fancied a black one for some time, but can't justify the price this year I don't think.

Looked at the black IK at Stafford James. have to say, to my mind it looked great. Has a couple of detail variations from the green one and of course its in the early DR (DRG) lettering, which is bolder than the latter DR lettering and of course in yellow.

I'll try to take some pics of the black and the green 1Ks side-by-side soon, James, so folks can see the differences (there are several).

Jon.

Paul,
Ann is one half of an identical twin (involved in twins research with Barts so had the DNA or whatever testing to confirm). Experienced hand with an LGB 55016. Does this mean that we need to book a trip to Chester (Roman Remains) and then detour to you, to test your new purchase ?
