UK/US/ROW steam narrow gauge railways 1:1
beavercreek said:1) Run up the gradient with a moderate rake of cars (5 log cars with lightweight logs) behind
2) Not runaway under load when going down the gradient
3) Be able to run for at least 10-15 minutes without 'phutting out'.
It will be good to see how your 1st run shay manages!
I think mine, new from GRC and direct from Accucraft 2 years ago, is a later run as it has the larger "oil bunker" mounted gas tank, variable rate oiler and the boiler looks much like the picture in the current listings. So you should be able to gauge the current model's performance.
Don't worry about the thing going out of control downhill.' you cannot take it "out of gear" like a regular loco. With those 3 "Large Ruby" derived cylinders whirring away nine to the dozen they are prodigious users of water, you should see the steam plume they put up. Any minature Shay would probably benefit from an axle driven pump if there was an easy way to fit one (think about it).

P.S. did you recieve my PM ?
