Just realised that I got the levels wrong here, the levels of handle holes, diamonds, should all be level with the outside frame, to avoid trip hazards

Right, chopped it up, shimmed the grid in the centre, dropped the grab handle recesses, & reassembled & first 2 coats of paint

looks better, but need a bit more attention to paint yet

Bought a pot of this from Lidls a while ago suposed to be FINE filler, but for my intended use not what I thought, as the grains in it were as large as sand grains, so mixed some with grey acrylic & used it to simulate a concrete finish on the slab, but still too coarse

Also been doodling with a bit of net that came with a model fishing boat that I had discarded

first one is a modern pressed steel type, with me using basically the same method as the maker by pressing the raised dimples ( not diamonds) in from the other side into the styrene

Diamond pattern inspection cover, small one, no handle lifts, just use screwdriver :bigsmile:
I have used recessed diamond pattern

a real one, again in my back garden, about 100 years old, used raised diamonds as a non slip device.

suppose I could use some thin styrene, cut into diamonds, stuck on top, to replicate that style

interestingly although this originally had had lifts across those recesses they have rusted away a long time ago, they were steel bars inserted into the casting, but the cast iron rusts very much slower,
So this also now a screwdriver job!! :bigsmile:
 
Street drain, as seen outside in the road, minus founders name cast in, that would be a bit small even in this scale, the cross bars are that shape to cope with 44 ton lorries!!

Very authentic Don!
I can remember a time when the cast iron grates were highly prized by a certain peripatetic section of the community - they were disposable and brought them some income!
