Looking for a good "British" locomotive...Any advise?

I have wanted to expand my mostly Swiss/American RR for some time but am having a hard time deciding what to start with...One of the reasons I decided to join this forum. I am looking at two possibilities: A Bachmann Lyn or Emily. Obviously I would modify the Emily to at least resemble a Sterling. Thinking of running 'Emily's coaches behind either of them.

The advantage for me is both are readily available and somewhat inexpensive.

Good idea? Bad idea? Other possibilities?

The new version of the Bachmann Lyn is superb and great value for money. I've got the Lyn version and the black US version which has been "Anglisized".

Sorry, forum won't let me download photos at the mo?

Either of the options for steam are excellent. If you start with Emily you can bash some of the others in the range into similar era locos too. Percy could be modified with an open back cab into something Fox Walker(ish) and James modified with inspiration from LNWR practice or even a short Jones Goods. Alter the smokebox area with a wrapper to make it into a D shaped one and some nice detailing.
The 66 is good but needs 4ft radius (8 diameter) minimum and there's not a lot to run with it. Something like the playmobil rc loco would make a good industrial shunter alongside it but you'll have to modify some stock to Anglicanise it from something like the Piko range.

If you are thinking about narrow gauge, you could consider the excellent range of Aristocraft wagons and the Baguley diesel....

Not to mention the Accucraft range of Caledonia or one of the W&LR locos.
Has anyone experience of the Bachmann Brassworks range or are they Gauge 1 track tolerant only?

Well I guess I now know what my first British engine will be...I found the Lyn for sale on line at $139.99 US. Had to do it.

You might also look at the Garden Railway Specialst's selection of kits.

Just make sure it is the newer version that has been in the shops in the last 2 years with the brass gears.

Now you need a Manning Wardle 2-6-2 to go with it, the Accucraft coaches, goods wagons ........................ You are about to find out how much L&B stuff is out there for G scalers. Wellcome to British NG, it's addictive.
Max.

I repainted my Lyn into Chocolate and Cream to match the home fleet of coaching stock.

The 'Emily' coaches also look very British once repainted from the 'shiny green plastic' look. The only drawback was the windows are glued in so well that I had to paint round them, very fiddly, but as second hand items they a good option for a G Scale English branch line train.

For some reason the market is horribly under supplied on electric British outline locomotives, if you really want a good British loco RDR you want to look at the live steam offerings.

They really are gorgeous, my Mayflower here isn't she the most beautifully proportioned narrow gauge loco you've ever seen?
