Making a New Start

I hate to say it but that oil depot is waaaay too clean...most ones I remember seeing had as much oil spilled around them as in their storage tanks:D

Still some work to do on the oil depot, Vic. Should the spillage be black or a very dark brown? If the ground is that contaminated, I'll definitely have to get Jerry some boots to wear!

New Year, new look at Hogwood Junction. The original depot buildings were copied from a tiny British halt, but always looked more like two garden sheds. Hopefuly a roof profile nearer in appearance to the depot at Cattewater will give a "family feel" to the line.

As there was almost no room for passenger accommodation, a waiting shelter has been added, based roughly on a typical US flagstop, plus a small outhouse. Most of the new structures came from spare bits of former buildings from the mk 1 layout, chopped about and re-worked. Still a bit of detailing and weathering to finish off.

Been adding details to the layout - mostly at Hogwood, where the depot has gained stove-pipe chimneys (as has the barber shop and mill office, plus the depot at Cattewater). The Hogwood depot's "necessary" has also been given decency screens and a fenced walkway. Andy Hawkins has now joined the depot staff as Freight Agent (you can see him, headless with a raised arm, in the the post above; he's now complete and has both hands in his pockets, as I prefer my figures to be in 'resting' poses where possible. Inside the depot, the waiting room/ticket office now has bench seating, and timetables and notices are displayed on the wall; in the staff room there's a stove, and a desk with some shelves for paperwork above it, plus traffic notices and operating rules posted on the wall. Still to add is a wall-mounted telephone, a store cupboard and a coal bucket for the stove.

The other job in progress is tidying up the join between the road surface and the rails at all the grade crossings. A subtle change that makes a lot of difference.

Many thanks Shawn. I'll try to get some new pictures up during the coming week as work progresses.

Well it depends how fresh the spill is, new oil would be black with a sheen, old oil where dirt and dust has mixed into it would be dark brown or dark grey/brown if on concrete, if it was my depot I would have a larger swath of "old" oil and a couple spots of "new" oil where leaks and spills would be most likely. I'll see if I can find pics of this effect.

Found a good pic of fuel oil spilled on concrete

Sounds like a good effect to aim for. Thanks for the offer of pictures, I'll look forward to seeing them.

Meanwhile I've a query on a general prototype matter, regarding the job descriptions on an American railroad as compared with their UK equivalent - will post this in its own thread later.
Edit Please see "Who does what?" in General G Scale Forum

Spent some time today adding weeds and grass along the ballast edges in the country section to hide any remaining straight edges of the polystyrene tiles forming the groundwork. Then went and added lots more texture round the yard at Cattewater. You can see some of the results in the picture. Also added a shelf - can't really call it a loading platform - in front of the Freight House doorway. All this was made easier as the swing flap was open ready to replace the Crimbo decorations in the eaves.

The furniture factory (rear right hand structure) has been half-finished for some time. I had a length of wooden moulding left over from a recent shelf project so added it as a cornice along the roof line; had to make up the length with a couple of decorative plaques at either end. Also added a bit of architectural detail above the door; pity it's just about invisible from the normal viewing angle.

After taking the picture I added the back half to the ventilator on the roof of the ice house, and started work on the vertical tanks that will hide the fact that there isn't a back part of the building. Another little job was to fit the last few planks into the top of the wharf and paint it all. At last - no more raw balsa in sight!

It's catch up time for pictures of the improvements at Hogwood.

I found the missing bit of plastic net, so the first one is a of some chain link fencing

Next one an overall view of the completed depot - now with heating for the winter

Inside the office. Don't know where the rest of the stove went, but luckily you can't see the back is missing when you look through the door.

The new member of staff - meet Andy Hawkins, Freight Agent. If you look closely, you'll see he's got Art to smarten himself up a bit.

Today it's the turn of the buildings surrounding the depot at Cattewater. The Ice Co now has its storage tanks completed.

Meanwhile here's a reminder of the cold-store building on the wharf. It will shortly be joined to an annexe on the ice house, via a covered bridge across the line (on the right of the picture) which will help hide the entrance to the fiddle yard.

Been rather busy this week, but managed an hour or so on the new buildings. The old one-storey porch from the Kuhlitz building has been re-configured as a two-story "flat" and there is the beginning of the next building, which has used up my remaining stock of foamcore board. Had to plank it with thin card as I've run out of balsa. I've still got to modify the old bridge to connect the buildings on either side of the track, and then make a sky board as a backing. Probably won't have much time until after the week-end for any more work or pictures.

When finished the group of buildings should act like the wings in a theatre and stop one seeing offstage into the fidddle yard- the picture below shows what needs to be hidden. See post #237 for the end result.

I should do the same at the other end of the line, but there's no way to hide the "hole in the sky" there. I suspect there will have to be a lot of foliage round the gap. I've got a bag of cushion wadding fibre somewhere which if sprayed green and with a dressing of Woodland Scenics texture might look OK. If it does, I might try a few more trees - they're conspicuous by their absence on the layout at present.

awesome work!! IT getting better..better!! keep going mate....how long is the layout?

Haven't ever got a tape measure out but I'd estimate that the track in the scenic area is about 30ft in length, with the hidden staging tracks at each end adding about another 11ft

In train lengths that's pretty short, which is why I use cut-down freight cars. The hidden tracks can take a loco, 3 cars and a short caboose, or two cars and the combine or drover caboose..

Edit 18 Jan 2011 - measured the scenic part of the layout today, and found it was a little shorter than I thought. It's actually 25 ft long excluding the staging tracks at either end.

Made some progress with the exit from Cattewater depot, but there's still a bit of tidying up to do.

Spent a little time working on the area round the ice house extension, just making it more overgrown and untidy.

Then I got to work on the oil depot. Is that getting better, Vic? Looking at the picture I think the oil seepage could spread a bit further.

I also finished off the background behind the oil depot. At present I'm trying out a bit of a wooden shed to the left of the pump-house, as it hides a 1970s era panel truck which has arrived on the backscene some 30 years too soon! To the right I've added a bit of Bilteezi 00 scale factory to make a middle distance building, and beside it is a little G scale chain-link fencing which I hope helps to force the perspective; you can't see much of it anyway, under normal viewing conditions. You can see Jerry's shoes on the gantry - they must pinch a bit, so he's slipped them off while he takes a break.

I've also bedded in the switchman's shanty with grass and weeds. Next job is to tackle the transition from scenic area to staging yard.

The ballast opposite the delivery pipe is still showing some clean areas, so I think another gentle go of diluted black is called for.

After that I need to get back to my H0 layout which has a show booking in March.

Meanwhile, I did get time for a quick runniing session recently. Here's a shot of the empty minerals heading back towards Sylenite.
