Making a New Start

Shell logo arrived safely, Mel - many thanks. Will try and get a picture posted by the week-end.

Its arrival has displaced Fred, who used to sit on a crate in that spot. At present he seems to have moved to become part of the staff at Hogwood Mill - having a break for refreshment outside the office, but no publishable pictures yet.

Very Nice Giles, I probably need to make one of them for my Shed which gets regular visits from Diesels and railcars. Regular Fuel Tanks run in with a small facility, but I need Diesel and Petrol too. So your idea for the pump may well be copied at some stage.

Many thanks, both, for your kind comments.

Jon, If you can't find a toothbrush holder a plastic syringe would work just as well (also has quantity gradations marked on the barrel). Only difference would be a sloping shoulder at the top instead of my rounded version.

Mel, Glad you like it. Many thanks for the finishing touch.

The ventilated boxcar was switched into the wharf spur at Cattewater the other day. However, nobody seems in a hurry to load it up - Albert's just pottering about with his tool-box, as usual. Wonder what's broken down this time.

Just back from a local show where I managed to pick up a G scale-ish semi-articulated figure for a reasonable sum. No time to take a picture, and he'll need some work to make him look acceptable - I anticipate baggier trousers and some sort of jacket, probably made from thin sheets of Miliput; some sort of hat would be more in period than a bare head, too.
Having had a chance to try the new figure out, he seems to fit into the general height/bulk of the rest of the population, though he's very slightly under average height. I think he'll fit in best on the loading dock of the cold store at Cattewater, where he can be bent over as if picking up one of the crates stacked there.

It's a hot day at Hogwood Junction as Mick waits for the freight train bringing in some steers to unload.

Here's the new worker on the layout - not named yet and in need of a new wardrobe and perhaps a hat.

Also made a start on shortening the second reefer. For some reason the yellow livery seems to make it look shorter than the white one, though they're exactly the same length. Perhaps when the lettering and weathering are finished it'll look better. Tamiya Hull Red was a good match for the end rungs, but I need to get a better yellow for the door hinges and side climbing irons.

No time to do much modelling this weekend - with a show to visit on Saturday and another on Sunday. Did manage to find some old tins of Humbrol yellow which when mixed together came pretty close to the colour of the reefer's colour. Certainly should look OK with a bit of weathering.

Meanwhile here's a shot from the last operating day with #1 entering Hogwood.

definately in a higher leage than any soap opera
hmmm not so sure there mate...
we've had the life stories and personal details of most of the characters, and although we haven't seen it, there must have been at least one catastrophic derailment....
Long may the soap opera continue !

Thanks for all the kind remarks, everyone. I've now run out of photos worth publishing. Hope there's time to take some more soon. There should be something to report when I finally have time for the RPO project, but that may not be for some months yet.

Meanwhile I'm just back from a model show put on by my old club in W. London, which had 2 large scale exhibits - a one baseboard section of the club's own G scale layout, and an awesome private effort in Fn3 by a team of four club members, which must be about 40 ft long. So far it's been in development for four years and is now almost fully scenic, with only some buildings at one end to finish. Like a fool I didn't take a camera, so cannot regale you with pictures. However it's called the Orange River & Portland, so if you hear that it's at a show near you, do go and take a look.

The reefer reduction and repainting is now complete, though the eagle-eyed (yes, you, Vic !) may notice the wheels still need some paint - I ran out of the right colour painting the body of the car. The length "problem" seems to have sorted itself out - in truth, I think my brain has got used to the yellow car being shorter and the weathering has distanced its appearance from the previously cleaner, longer look.

Meanwhile, hidden by the two cars, Fred has settled down on his box outside the mill's office.

The outdoor jobs got rained off today, so it was time to do some paperwork instead. However there was time for a couple of hours to make a start on the RPO project. Managed to get my A and B ends confused so made a couple of wrong cuts, but managed to salvage things so the body will come out the correct length, and with the windows in the right positions - just some of the joins will be in places not anticipted.

Too early for pictures today, but I hope to get some time over the weekend to carry on a bit more.
