Making a New Start

Luckily my order to Ozark arrived just in time to be dealt with immediately (they only ship on Mondays and Fridays, apparently) so the bits for the RPO are on their way.

Meanwhile work has just started on the outside-braced boxcar. But first I needed to work out how large the bracing actually is; the drawing suggests about 3x3 inches and I managed to get some 3.2x3.2mm styrene strip which should be about right. However, on looking through all my pictures of OB boxcars found they all had horizontal planks whereas my Bachmann sides are vertically planked. This means an overlay - though this will help to tie together all the small sections I was planning to use. Allowing for the square styrene strips and overlays means I'm adding 8mm to the car width, and the prototype was only 7ft wide, which is already less than a Bachmann car. I figure on compromising slightly and have taken 10mm out of the car floors, so the finished vehicle will be very slightly narrower than its companions, but about the same width as a flat car.

Early days of the OB boxcar conversion - more like pick'n'mix in this view, but the varigated sides will be covered by overlays.

I did think of using some Evergreen novelty siding I found I had in stock, but the plank widths were a bit too narrow, so I ended up scribing planks on plain styrene. Pictures of this another time. Meanwhile, here's a view from below the car, showing less than perfect cutting-and-shutting, luckily held together by wood strip and a false floor of 80thou styrene on the inside.

Got both ends fitted today and the basic bracing on one side. Should be able to do some more on the other side and take a picture on Thursday, when the weather forecast is wet, and I'll be able to grab some more model time.

Latest progress - all the bracing is finished, end sills added, and doors made from spare pieces of car floor to make use of the moulded graining (and because this was the only vertical planking on the prototype being copied).

Had to fix the kitchen's sliding door, which wasn't.... after which I had a couple of hours spare to work on the new boxcar. Got the (thankfully dummy) door sliders on, and the roof. Was going to put on an overlay of planks but then decided to make this car a bit different, so trimmed the roof with the last of my 50-year-old corrugated Christmas foil.

I'll add a picture to this post later, after I've got the roof-walk fitted.

Edit: Sorry, pictures got delayed as I decided to paint the car before getting the camera out

As ever I wanted to rush ahead, so these views are still of the part-completed car body - paint still drying. Still to add are some corner strap-iron/bolt-head details.

One end has a little platform for the brake-man. While I was finishing the paint-job our postie delievered the packet of detail parts from Ozark. No duty payment

Nice job. Looks a little like the gauge 3 parcels/milk van I've got in mind.
I agree it does look quite British, Mel. If it wasn't for the peaked roof, you could letter it SR and fool people that it came off the L&B.

Just when it was going so well..............went back to check on the drying paint, turned the car round...and saw I'd stuck one of the diagonal battens on the wrong way round (see post 364 - 3rd bay next to the centre door;I never noticed while I was taking the pictures). Luckily managed to get it unstuck with only very minor damage and reglued it leaning in the correct direction. Small hole filled and a new coat of paint applied to that bay. Luckily it's the same side of the vehicle as the less-good slope of the roof. As cars on the C&S don't get turned, it can be the side that will always face the wall.

With an operating day coming up in 10 days I've been doing some Admin work. At the last session we had the timetable (version 3) did not seem well balanced; in fact, looking back, the first version seemed to have worked the best. (This version was posted earlier). However owing to extra stock having arrived since then a little tweaking was necessary, in particular adding a daily Mail train in each direction, to make use of the RPO. At the same time I tried to minimise the need for trains to cross, though as it happens one of the Mails has to cross two trains on its run from Clydes Creek to Bonneyville.

As usual trying to keep track of the various loco/caboose moves throughout the day, and get them back to their "home" depot at the end of the timetable proved quite complicated. I also try to provide a mid-shift break for train crews who "work" shifts of up to 10 hours. Add to this there is the need to keep the services balanced - no good having all the freight cars going North if there are fewer potential trains to bring them South again. As Freights can carry 3 cars and a Mixed up to two, this can be an easy trap to fall into. Luckily a check at the end of the plotting session showed that the loadings were even - through there is an additional Mixed from Cattewater to Clydes Creek.

Plotting? I design timetables on a sheet of graph paper (time across the top, stations down the left hand side) with diagonal lines to represent trains. This makes it easy to see where the trains are and to avoid cornfield meets.

Finally with some new vehicles recently I need to make some new car cards to use with the train orders.
Edit:
On the subject of balanced workings, a trawl through the load cards revealed that there were no boxcar loads originating at Southvale - which seems unlikely. Thus the only way for them to leave town was as an |Empty going elsewhere to be loaded. To rectify this state of affairs one or two cards from other destinations have been altered, and if this works, I'll print them out properly.

The C&S went out visiting today, so for the first time a train (Number 4 and a five wagon freight) operated under the open skies - on the Dunns River Railway. A very pleasant afternoon - thanks to Philip and family' for the hospitality, and to the other operators for initiating me into the world of live steam.

Ross - a PS to my pm! The final difference was to move the bell to a new bracket on the sadlle tank front, and mount a turbocharger on top of the tank in its place. Strictly speaking I should now change the headlamp to an electric one but perhaps Zeke Howard, our Master Mechanic, bodged it and just put a car headlamp inside the casing of the old oil light.

Meanwhile, I also managed to smooth out the bad paint finish where I'd had to move one of the diagonal braces (it's on the other side!) and got the bogies under the new boxcar. It was put into service straight away and will have to wait a less busy time to have its number added, not to mention a brake wheel.

Another operating day this week-end, so there should be some more action shots soon.
Meanwhile here's a picture from a past ops day with #7 creeping over the trestle.

Running day yesterday. Philip joined us for the first time, but the other operator forgot the date, so things were rather busy and I took no pictures of my own. I've added some of Philip's pictures with his permission.

Been re-reading this thread, I'll be starting again with a small switching layout and this thread has been proving most helpful.

Vic,
Glad to have been helpful as I've taken some ideas from your pictures from time to time.
This new switching layout..........is it the reason the "wedding cake" had to lose a slice???

Indeed it is, the Pizza got sliced mostly to try to get its footprint down to a minimum, already have the benchwork for the new layout complete, I'm moving alot slower on this layout, being careful I can get it into the space so I havent published a plan or photos yet, dont want to make a fuss then have to back off, besides I'm still tweeking the plan.

I'll PM you with the plan, have a look and let me know what you think of it.

President Obama's Re-election Campaign seems to have started early...........about 70 years early, unless time travel's been invented or the C&S survived a lot longer than anyone expected. Shame nobody seems to have told Security, or the Press....or booked a band!
Still it's a bit of excitement in a town where not too much happens, normally.
