Making People "The how to" or rather "how i do"

just remembered a couple of things on the baking front before we get into painting
i use an OLD (not used for cooking anymore) yorkshire pudding baking tray as figs sit stll while baking and you can see the temp i set it at in the picture 130 for 15 ish minutes, ive no idea what the is in Gas degrees, mark, whatever that is sorry.

Excellent stuff, Tony, thanks. I will be very pleased if mine turn out half as good as yours - but you have inspired me to have another bash at it.

Thanks for the step-by-step guide. Really clear pictures.

Hobo cakes.........

By the way Tony..if you perfect the manufacture of Trilbys that are scale size and fit onto figures 1:24 to 1:29 e then I will have a caseful.
A lot of my characters are unhatted and the era that I am covering on the layout is about late 30's to early 60s. In that era, American males would invariably wear a hat of some description. Funnily enough my 1:20.3 figures seem to correctly attired for the era that I model.
I have tried to make them myself but the problem is two fold. When trying to do a batch: getting the brim really thin so it looks the part without the clay just breaking and also making sure the inside of the hat can actually fit on the head without looking like it is a very oversized headpiece. I could of course 'sharpen' the figures head!
I will press on but I wish that a manufacturer would just make a set of hats like Preiser who do include one hat with their unpainted accessories set.

Mike these first two were the ones i promised for you or stuart but if they not dress correctly ive grown quite attached to them and can always do some more !!!!!!!!!!! :rolf::rolf:
if you let me have the figs you want Hatting i will do them it the same sort of way, make a hat molded over the fig remove hat, bake and paint ive done that here with helmets of motor cyclists

Hi Tony
No I am definitely up for the the hobos, they look real fine!

Yeah I have tried the moulding to the head but getting a trilby to look like a trilby to match the 'perfect' look of the rest of the plastic moulded figure is the real hard bit. My attempts range from sombreros to Ascot day jobbies!

15 hour nightshifts and glorious weather have put pay to much people building but have managed to throw some paint on the two Hobos
I use Humbrol enamals in the little tins, some people use water based acrilics but i cant get on with them and they need sealing if left outside. All my winter made people finished in Humbrol have been outside since January and none have suffered any damage despite being used as play things by 4 year old granddaughter
I used matt earthy colours and finished with a white spirit thinned wash of white and one of black to highlight edges or dirty the clothing

OK il admit the beards are suspect (Should have used a finer pointed tool) but from a distance they will do....... Here are a few posed shots from this afternoon to be honest they are both on the tacky side of being dried and wont look so shiny in the morning

Carbonised:rolf::rolf: Thought I was looking at one of SWMBO's off days!

I did say it would take me a couple of weeks to do 30 people well because of extra shifts at work and lovely weather meaning ive been outside landscaping its taken longer :( sorry
Any way i have done some
i wanted some Miners for my quarry i was going to do three just coming out after a shift but then the accident in wales made me think it would be nice to pay small homage to that brave band of men.. As we know 4 were killed but 7 started that shift on that day so................... 7 it is
trees001.jpg

They are all carrying something and most are singing as welsh miners tend to have a habit of doing

Here they have just had their first coat of wash as soon as it dries i will give them another and out they will go
They arent surposed to be acurate they are my idea of how my miners might look. all have reflective Hi-vis wastecoats grey overals and hardhats, plus shoulder bags containing gas masks and batteries for their lamps........One is carrying Explosives and a roll of detonating wire, one has a tin box of detonators some have shuvels (not shown)
they are all going to be fixed to a plastic base that will be hided under gravel and i may be brave enough to drill through the lamps on the hard hats and fit LEDS
Hope they give some of insperation to do some for yourselves

A rerally nice thing to do Tony. As Mel said it is a laovely tribute.
Your 'people' skills are really developing at a pace (small scale people that is :rolf::rolf:)

Very impressive! Any tips on doing the hands?

Rik

Thanks guys, Mike, Rik

Rik Hands are my nightmare i either try and get them to hold something and the scribe the fingers with a small nail or make the shape of a mitten (fingerless glove) and scribe that,, its always the case you end up applying 3 times as much as you need. i have learnd to not forget the wrist if you look the wrist is alot narrower than the hand and often we forget that and just put a blob on the end of the arm that is the same width.
i do though finish the arms (down to the cuff) and bake then do the hands last that way you dont get so much movement when playing with fingers as the clay will try and tear

Tony
PS wet clay doent like sticking to baked clay so i dab a brush of white spirt on the dry bit and then the new clay will stick enough untill baked i think it has something to do with traped air (excuss me vicar)

I think it is called the adhesive parp quotient :rolf:

If i can just endulge myself for a moment here are a few pics of the finished lads just finishing work.............. surpose i should do a another set of clean miners just starting work on the next shift... ?????????????? .............. Er no not just yet :(
I do need to make a wagon to transport them tho maybe a something with just a double bench down the centre facing out so they sit back 2 back with their feet hanging out side and a corigated tin roof.... bit like a unpowered Tram
