How do you Operate your line? Timetable with the Ore going to somewhere meaningful and empties back? Or is that to be the next stage?

I really enjoy the operational side of things. Here's a flavour of how I run the line.

Since I wrote this (2010) I've weathered most of the stock and built a couple more locos, including a Fowler diesel mechanical to haul the tipplers from the mine.

Rik,
Many thanks for the link to your Operations. Indeed you do make the line work for a living. Great stuff. I think that the Cradles that you use to move Stock to where it was if you need to end a session for whatever reason are a great idea. I have seen them before, did you do an article for a Magazine or was it written up on this site? Not sure that it would work for me as I have more wagons at any one Station. But I have (had) two Sheds so that stock from the 2 Main Stations was easily pushed into the Sheds. The small passing Station at a lower level was also pushable into the Shed. Plus the Station at a higher level worked in the same way. Thus all stock was inside and secure outside of sessions and easily put back the way it was for the next one.

I keep track of where things are with a spreadsheet, dealing playing Cards to define where and how wagons will be moved. Sometimes very little happens, other sessions it is all chaotic with more traffic than can be easily managed by the Mixed Trains. I only run mixed trains as that is how the Seketalbahn works in the Harz. Busy or quiet its all in the cards.

My new line in construction just now will have a similar set up having two sheds for storage of rolling stock, but not locomotives. They as always live indoors.

Yes, there is a posting on my blog about the stock boxes - http://riksrailway.blogspot.co.uk/2010/04/how-i-made-some-stock-boxes.html < Link To http://riksrailway.blogsp...-some-stock-boxes.html
Maybe that's where you've seen them before - but quite a few modellers use 'cassettes' in their fiddle yards which is where I pinched the idea from.

Sounds like you enjoy the freight handling aspect as well. IMO it makes operating sessions a bit more interesting and meaningful. I've always enjoyed working out shunting problems. I know it's not everyone's cup of tea - but I think that's what makes this hobby so versatile - each can focus on what interests them the most.
