Model railway toolkit

[engaging Pendant Mode] that the kit is all you need for a POST-CLAMSHELL LGB loco, as it appears to only have one screwdriver, that being a crosshead.... earlier locos need a decent flat-blade driver to get the rusty panhead screws out..... ;) [Pedant Mode disengaged]

No!
It is not a lubricant. Can create more problems than it solves.

Thanks all for your comments. I’m now searching for a good quality set on eBay or amazon, but proving to be a challenge to find right sizes at sensible price
:)

I'm thinking Pugs most likely meant the WD40 to help shift any rusty or recalcitrant old screws, not as lubricant for the loco.....

Correctomundo, my man.
This is a lube

Sorry for being silly on your thread but I have a very good 1/4" drive set from Black & Decker plus I recently bought a set of model engineers open spanners from someone advertising on eBay by Bergen (from 3mm up), both sets are metric ( yeah, right, 1/4" drive with metric heads  )
Not exactly cheap but will last a lifetime without rounding off bolt heads. For me, that's worth the outlay.

Hardly a 'hijack' suggesting spending on good-quality tools...

A quality tool, unless mistreated, will last a lifetime! :):nod:

Yeeeeeahh...... you don't want to be mixing that up with the 3-in-1 (oh dear, I've just realised what I've typed there)....... that'll gum up your valve gear for certain......

Jon.

Why would it gum-up the valve gear? Non-stainz-ing and water-soluble? :wasntme::angel::angel:

Perhaps not everyone wants a loco that goes Ooh and Aah as it goes round the track

I have seen someone use WD40 as smoke oil in 00 scale - yes it works, but baby oil is better.

I bought one of those LGB tool kits years ago when they still had flat screwdrivers - the sockets have been brilliant and I would Reccomended them, although I have since had to buy some small Phillips type screwdrivers to supplement the LGB ones.

My set came with a neat wire stripper too, which has also seen a lot of use.

I use wd40 to clean my live steamer before I put it back on the shelf. I thought this was a good idea but after reading some of the comments maybe I shouldn't

That is fine..
You are not leaving it 'swimming' in the stuff..

If you have a steel-bodied loco (like the recent Mamod Boulton) then it is a good idea to have a slight spray round the 'join' between body and chassis. - The body is easily removable, as you can use standard dry-cell batteries..
Then give it a wipe-off. This will discourage corrosion, and help keep the loco clean.
