Modeling a small Yorkshire station

Paint, are acrylic and/or enamel modelling paints OK for painting a building that is going to be outdoors? Are they weatherproof/sun proof enough and if so what sort of maintenance work intervals do you see (touch ups each year?) And final question, do people finish the painting with a lacquer or anything?

Jason - I've used different paints on different models - Depended on what I had to hand :bigsmile:

For the station I built for Mike I used enamel paints (Humbrol) and did finish off with a matt varnish overspray
I generally use enamels for buildings outdoors - although I do find the acrylics from "Games Workshop" great to work with also

For this building I used Halfords Acrylic car sprays as I had a large area to cover

I'm not really sure what colours the station should be, the only colour photo I have is a late BR picture. I'm aiming for an earlier setting as my coaches will mainly be in L&Y livery. As it was Methley Joint was a joint railway I'm not sure which firm was dominant, so I'm going to stick with the L&Y theme and combinations of tan and brown for buildings etc with black signs and name boards.

We'll see how it looks!
 
A lot of paints made for models don't hold up well outdoors. The paints I use are craft acrylics, either Apple Barrel brand or Craft Smart. I also give almost everything a top coat of Krylon UV resistant matte finish. But these paints probably aren't available in the UK.

I also use exterior grade latex house paint for some things. Since this is made for outdoor use it holds up probably better than anything else. I usually get the small sample size jars.
 
Will it be getting one of those namesake man eating mops? I've always wondered how to model them - without it coming out more cartoon-ish looking than they already are.

I'm going to build a row of 4 terraced houses but I cant get the issues of garden rail... A link or some pics here would be fantastic......

That's amazing and has inspired me very much. Well done. There is some superb modeling on here.

The big Brewery is out all year, and has been for about 5 years (Ian will know for sure, at Ians). The station building is at mine (all built by Ian) and comes into a shed from about Nov' to April or so and other than a window frame missing has been fine for about 5 years too, so I'm sure yours will be fine outside.

I assume you are going to use Oz buildings for your layout.
I would recommend having a look at
A Guide to Identifying Australian Architecture by Richard Apperly.

Dick was a lecturer of mine at the Uni of NSW and was very down to earth. It is very to the point, with no architectural crap and ideal for high lighting the building details that modelers like to home in on.
Should be available from ACT Library Service.
Having said that many UK prototype terraces will work in NSW as the Sydney Building Regulations were based on the London Building Acts. Which is one reason why Sydney is so different to Melbourne.
Small detail on post 29, It would be more typical for the back garden wall to be integral with the outbuilding, but of course you would also have to add in a 2?x2? low level door for Paddington.

I love the detail.
From what I have seen its very difficult to model a run down building like the brewery, and keep it dynamic which is exactly what you have done.

okkkkkkkkk... Oz buildings is??
After looking at the mindblowingy superb work here I have no chance of even getting close to that. My intention is to build a row as per those in the pics and have the rivet counters eyes drawn more to the cast iron lace that I'll be able to etch from brass sheet. I have a few sheets of vac formed plastic sheet with roof tiles, weatherboard, brick etc and my method was going to be to make a mould of these ( in casting plaster) and then make up what "sheeting" I need in fibreglass, which will withstand the rigours of use and exposure. This will give me the surface texture i need. Then I can paint the lot....Sydney Terrace houses were rarely exposed brick/masonry ( thank YOU for that) all were limed in mostly browns and earthy tones, I'm talking in their original state.... I'll duck into the Library and check out Apperly's book. But another sypathetic resource is Balmain Council, I'v spoken to them re modelling the Dummy and they were most eager to help out sent me photos and even specs ( that STM didn't seem to have - even though the dummy is apparently there) and they seem keen to help so I'll chat to them about terrace houses they would have plans and dimensions I would suspect they will jump at the chance to have Grove st rebuilt in G scale....
That brickwork just makes my blood run cold trying to do that WOW, simply stunning.... I had enough of the "doing it brick by brick" paving my terminus. I used to work with a guy Les Whalley ( anyone remember Les?) and he used to build brick by brick tile by tile - in HO under a large maggy lamp....
I'm inspired and this is so inspiring...

Sorry but I thought that this thread was about modelling a small Yorkshire station! Could the mods sort out the various tangles or has it gone too far?
P.S. Bring back Redgates :clap:
 
a tip,, from station jades station. re the roofing felt tiles.. its easyer, to do a run, ie 10 in a row, instead offcutting individual tiles, cut a slit 3/4s of the way up,.so it looks like individual tiles, when layered on..
 
The tiles do look impressive, most impressive. I'm about to try making sheets of shingles from the rounded ends of paddlepop sticks laid offest like tiles or in fact shingles....
