MTS on Analogue

Yesterday I went to pick up a £25 oo gauge bachmann junior loco than I had put on order at my favourite model shop. I left locoless, but still 25 quid out of pocket.The money went on a deposit for a second hand LGB rugens Diesel. :D :) Due to be brought home sometime during August owing to good exam results, birthday present and Input from my summer job.

The loco is MTS with sound etc. but I was wondering if it would be safe to use the loco for prolonged periods of time on my analogue layout without damaging the electronics in the loco?

If anybody was wondering the shop is Acme Models ( http://www.acmemodels.co.uk/ . If anybody is in or around the Leicester/Loughborough area they recently received someone's entire G scale collection- all LGB, all MTS and the majority had sound. From what I can remember there were 2 or 3 of the saxon mallets, green and black. One of the big 2-10-2 tanks going for £1000, two of the Nicki + Frank S type tender engines, green and black. And several others and rolling stock. All going for very good prices and all like new
 
Yes it will be ok to run on analogue. The chip are designed that way.
 
No problem Ricky provided you use reasonably smooth DC power.
Some of LGB's later productions had MTS as standard and non-MTS versions weren't made as they claimed their digital locos were fine on analogue.

Hullo Ricky,

as others have mentioned here, MTS locos work fine on analogue. However, I would warn about using MTS fitted locos withthe Basic Train Engineer (TE), i.e. the orange one which has PWM only, and not smoothed DC.

The more 'upmarket' TE (the black one) has a switch for either DC or PWM, and this should always be set to DC for LGB MTS locos. Some folks fit glue a piece of plastic over the switch, so it can't be selected to PWM accidentally.

I use the TE with my locos, and I've had no problems running the MTS fitted Kof loco and one of my two V52s which I brought new with MTS fitted as standard.

Well done on passing your exams, and I hope that you enjoy your new loco; it's a nice machine....

Well although I would usually bend to those of us who have had more experience with LGB mts locos on analogue I have used them on my layout which is TE analogue and I have forgotten to put the receiver into linear as opposed to PWM mode. So the locos were receiving pulsed voltage and they seemed to work perfectly okay with the added fact that the lights were at full brightness at lower power and the sound was fine too. So although I can not say for definite that an accidental use of PWM should not cause problems. I must state that I did not ramp up the power to full so perhaps it would be best not to use PWM until there is a definitive answer from a specialist.:nail:

Yes good point, DON'T use PWM if you've got a Train Engineer Ricky. I've glued a plate in place on mine to make sure it never happens.
 
Thanks for the warning, I use the 5A LGB transformer and controller but I'll keep that in mind for the future ;)
