An unusual visiting loco on the line today...can anyone identify it?

O.k. it's time for the first clue.

It's made to 1:22.5 scale, which is uncommon for live steamies....

And it has a 'drop in' gas tank that you remove through the cab door, fill, then drop back into place...

O.k. it seems no-one is going to get this one.

The owner informs me that it was made by a small outfit called MDT. No, I had never heard of them either. (This does agree with the fact that the letters MDT are stamped on the gas tank - although this could be German for 'pressure vessel' for all I know.)

Anyhow it is a nicely proportioned loco. We don't yet know how well it runs as it needs some work on the r/c. The whole gas tank /burner arrangement is very different from a Roundhouse or Accucraft setup so here's hoping we can get it to work.

That's interesting Steve, I should have guessed that you would have one! Is yours in full working order?

It is an M-D-T Schweer Walenburg but has been repainted, this is what it should look like:

I thought I was the only person with one in the UK as they were made in the early 90's and not well known about. They also made a Stainz which I also have.

Seemingly they also offer(ed) an Austrian Achensee Zahnradbahn gauge 1 steamer for LGB Rack Rails. I have to wonder how capable it would be to utilise the rack?

I don't think anyone has mentioned the most unusal things about these loco; they have a Willesco type pot boiler with large circular sight glass within an outer tube.

I didn't think to try and get a decent photo of that feature. The frame of the enormous sight glass can just be seen in this crop of one of the pics.

Hi Steve,

that's the only pic I found of it, though I'm not sure, if it's genuine MDT built or a conversion based on an MDT frame...

the other thing is - as you questioned if the Wangerooge in green/black is the original livery - I'm not sure, if it may have been a colour variation MDT offered at the time - if you compare the shade of green with the Waldenburg green and the tram loco green, they all look pretty similar...
