Hello & welcome. I have quite a few Big Haulers and other Bachmann ones. The tender does take a 9v battery but I find some brands are just a fraction over size. You can always file the opening a little bit. I use metal track and, as mentioned, it is a good option. I run on track power but only simple analogue. The battery is for the sound and needs the tender to be plugged into the loco.
