New NGG 16 Garratt / Design S. Fabre

Live steam on the indoor K&NWLR
I visited the Freienbach Large Scale exhibition, and met Sebastien Fabre, who was displaying his new electrically-powered NGG 16 locomotives, made using LGB bogies, plastic and whitemetal castings. He used the original drawings and has made long trips to the WHR to photograph the real thing. The result is, in my opinion, extremely impressive. They are essentially hand-built, and available in analogue, digital and R/C-battery power. My camera phone photos don´t really do justice to the result, but give an indication of what can be expected. He can reached at sebastien.fabre (at) bluewin.ch, and speaks excellent English (French and German). Expect prices of between CHF 4000-4500 (GBP 2750-3000 ish).

Corr!, they look nice.

But one, get one free! ;D

Leaving aside the obvious restrictions imposed by live steam, how do these models stack up against the accucraft one ?

This is an all electrical version, so it´s probably legitimate to compare it to the LGB one from years back. But from the Accucraft perspective, I can say as an Accu owner that the one I saw at the show was much more detailed in terms of the piping around the boiler and the detail on top. Compared with the ELR coal-fired NGG16 it´s night-and-day, but they are designed to meet completely different specs.

Do you know what scale it is?

"G scale" - 1:22.5, I would say, but why not contact the builder to be sure.

Sébastian is a nice guy and was very open about his (bespoke) production methods. Sounds as though he spends about 100 hrs a locomotive on getting things right.

I have received a prompt reply from Sebastien which gives some more details. The scale is 1.22.5. As others on the forum may be tempted I will copy his email here which also gives more details as to price, payment and delivery. There is no mention of a difference in price between analogue, digital and battery versions (personally I'm tempted by the battery option). There is also a link to his website.

Thank you for your message.

I am a craftsman and built different material for model railway from 1:160 to 1:22,5. Some of my production are presented on this web address :

http://www.swisstrains-stp.ch/2014/Garratt_echelle_IIm.html (unfortunately in french...)

The NGG 16 you saw on the forum was posted by a Andrew how visited an exhibition last week end. This model is 1:22,5 to be run on LGB track, even the real loco is running on 2 ' gauge.
All parts are built by myself in my workshop (but rods are in stainless steel laser cut in a professional workshop and motors from LGB). I need about 3 months to built a loco according to your command (color, analogue, digital or R/C batteries command). Color can be red/black with yellow lining, green/black with red lining or black. Finish can be shiny or mat. Anyway last cover is 2 components car body painting. LGB or Kadee couplers can be fitted as you like.

The total cost is Frs 5'000.- for a black loco and Frs 5'500 for a two colors loco. I would like to get a deposit of Frs 2'000.- on my bank account in Switzerland for an order, rest of the price when delivery. I assume you stay in U.K. and if you order a loco we have to manage a delivery way. I wouldn't like to send the loco by mail even the loco is sold in a solid wooden case included in price...

If you have an opportunity to by on trip in Switzerland I suggest you visit me and have a look on the loco.

You will find included some pictures and a description of the loco (unfortunately in french, I have to make an english translation, sorry !).

Best regards

Sébastien Fabre

I have been admiring some photographs of your very fine NGG 16 model that have been posted on G Scale Central forum.

Can you please tell me what scale your model is?

If I order one how much deposit would you require?

Yours faithfully

One other thing that occurs to me is that Switzerland is not a member of the EU so maybe duty has to be added to the price? Can anyone clarify?

You may need to pay UK VAT, or you go and collect it .... :-\ Nice place, Switzerland. Plenty of railways, if you want to make a holiday of it.

Model railways do not attract duty, but VAT would be payable (if they notice it coming in).
If you have paid duty on model railway imports challenge the courier - who charged you for their professional service! ::)

The tariff (duty) code for model railways is 95 03 00 3000
Train sets may be under 95 03 00 7000
Radio control and infra red may be classified differently
