New to G Gauge based in Dorset.

I'll take a look on Ebay & see if I can find a 'cheap' live steam loco & test the plastic track. Secondhand LGB may be next!!

Id be extremely careful about buying a steam engine from eBay. Lots can be wrong with them. You'll be far better off going to a show or shop where you can actually meet the seller and try out the loco

If you are thinking going live steam and battery then you might want to consider joining the 16 mm NGM society - https://www.16mm.org.uk/. they have a big annual show in Peterborough, I know, it;s a bit of a schlep from Dorset, but well worth it. You will see most of the traders and manufacturers there and numerous show layouts with probably the kind of things you're looking to run. The society will also get you in touch with local garden railway enthusiasts who will be running regular "steam ups" so you can get plenty of ideas for setting up and running in the garden. Max

There's a Somerset & Dorset area group. As Maxi-model said check out the 16mm Association website, a veritable mine of good information

Welcome. Lots of great information on here. Everyone is super helpful on here too.. look forward to seeing your progress

1. Welcome aboard!

2. There is no such thing as a 'cheap' live-steamer. By the time you've fixed the reasons that it was cheap, you might just as well have bought a new one - with a guarantee. Driving around the countryside, taking and collection the 'cheap' model to and from the 'fixer', can buy you a lot of steam time in your own backyard.

My nearest 'fixer' in UK is a 170 mile round trip...your mileage may differ.

Thanks Tac....a very valid point. I think I have a lot to learn to have a fun but successful G gauge / steam setup.

HI to all you experts who I hope can help me as I progress with G Gauge for the first time. Basic railway modelling so far has been in OO gauge.
My first question (Apols if this has been asked before) Is it possible to connect plastic track to LGB metal track?
Many Thanks

You can connect Playmobil plastic track to LGB track via a little adaptor and it connects perfectly. Playmobil track, however, has ballast moulded in so you may not like the look of it. Here's a link to show a straight piece:

http://www.playmobil.co.uk/12-straight-tracks/4384.html

The curves are slightly tighter than R1 at R0.9.

Welcome aboard.
