Newby with Lionel Parts Issue

Hello All,

The wifey and I are just starting to tinker around with G scale. A few years ago we purchased a Bachmann Christmas set to use around the tree. Now that I have retired we have decided to start up working with the scale a little more than just xmas. We have adding to the stable by picking up an LGB Stainz which I had to re-index the wheels to get running and modified the rear of the engine a little to fit a knuckle coupler on. Man what a Swiss watch to work on, but runs great now. I also picked up a Lionel Gold Rush set, some extra track and a few cars. We’ll start with getting use to things inside the house and then eventually find a spot outside on our acreage for a layout. I have all the “boy toys” so to speak with a 10 inch Logan lathe, a fully outfitted Unimat 3 lathe, a mill, welders and my CNC outfit. I like the early steam era and thought it would be fun to fire the CNC up to scratch build parts and even cars for the big scale.

Anyway, I am having an issue with getting spare parts for my little Lionel 060 in particular the side rods. I down loaded a parts listing and found a place on line to order parts from. The side rods that I was sent are not even close to what is on the engine originally. I even took photos and sent them to the place that I got the parts from and after a few prods was told that these are the correct parts. I checked with a couple of other sources on the net and sure enough, they also showed the same wrong part.
It seems this may be one of those rare times where indeed a square peg does fit in a round hole.
Did Lionel switch part numbers sometime in the past or does one have to scratch build new side rods for this engine?

Here is a photo of the engine.

Here is a photo of the of the side rods (top rod is the original and the bottom rod is the new one).

And last but not least is the exploded view with part numbers.

Any help would sure be appreciated.

;) If you're planning to go outside with your railroad, don't use the Bachmann track that came with the set. It will rust away. Seek out brass track from LGB/Aristo.

Welcome to the forum.

All,
Thanks for the responses.
I have been poking around the web and I think I have found the answer to what is going on with the side rods. It appears that sometime in the past someone at Lionel in all their infinite wisdom crossed part numbers with engines or sets. I have found a Lionel Christmas set (part # 8-81019) that has a cheaper so to speak 060 engine with the goofy side rods. The elongated end is shown being mounted on the front drive wheels and it sure does not look very prototypical at all.
The 060 engine I have is from a Lionel Gold Rush set (part number 8-81000). Granted it is not a high dollar unit, but it is more detailed or realistic than the Christmas set engine. The rods are definitely not interchangeable do to how they mount to the drive wheels. The main issue is the center wheel mounting which has a large through hole on the Gold Rush engine and the so called replacement rod has a small boss on the outer side without a through hole at all. The Christmas set engine probably does not connect the side rod to all the drive wheels, but only uses the front and back wheels to mount to and lets the center wheel float so to speak.
I have been emailing Lionel and they of course do not support this engine any more. So the answer to my dilemma is to get out some brass or aluminum plate and fire up my CNC to duplicate the side rods which should be a fun little project.

Also, my apologies on the size of the photos. Will size more accordingly in the future.
