Not really a garden, but....

Well Groudle Glen is a small railway!

My friend John received his new loco yesterday, so it would have been rude not to. The 'Steamplex' was once a diesel, and is now a steam loco, after some 'therapy' at Keef's works. She's great fun to drive, and has one hell of a chuff to her, especially when climbing the 1 in 30 to the sea. Yum. It's going to take a while to get the ash out my hair though.......

ow very nice neil.. not you, the loco

Wonderful. I love it.

That's not me in the photos Mike - I'm MUCH better looking. Or something.

Paul, the idea of the owner was that he wanted it to look as much as possible like a De Winton, which it sort of does! Great fun to drive too, had a great afternoon.

Lovely pics and lovely engine Neil
Groudle Glen is one of my favourite railways, although last time we were there I left herself standing on the platform as I went off for a footplate ride with John 8|

Hi Col. OOps, want to be careful there mate! There'll be no more train cake if you keep doing that! This is a lot easier to have two on the footplate than Sea Lion, or were you lucky enough to be on Annie? SL gives you a crick in the neck! You wouldn't believe the chuff it has, sounds magnificent.

What a terrific little loco. Must visit the line when I am in the vicinity as it looks a good'un

Great loco.
A bit worried Neil about "one hell of a chuff to her, especially when climbing the 1 in 30 to the sea"
Is the Groudle Glen Railway below sea level? ;););)
EDIT: How strange that despite working so hard there is no sign of exhaust from the chimney.

No, but it is uphill big time - it's the line's USP! It starts deep in the glen, and the end of the line is high on cliffs above the sea. Come and see.....

They burn Welsh steam coal at Groudle so no smoke to speak of, I would have expected a little steam to have shown, but she was working so hard it's probably out of shot! She shows some steam when pulling away but little when warmed through. I don't think she's superheated, so it's a little odd so little steam shows though. maybe due to the amount of hot flue gas going up the chimney too?

So, with a live steam Accucraft 7/8ths 'Sea Lion' and matching IP rolling stock in the pipeline, and now the chance to bash a Mamod 'Brunel' vertical bolier loco, Groudle is suddenly very model-able. If I wasn't committed to the IOM 3', I could be tempted!

I admit to casting eyes over a Regner 'Chaloner'...with that thought in mind!

Of course if you put the 3' stock out of sight, 45mm gauge in 7/8th scale becomes 2'......hmmm.....

Go on Neil, you know you want to. :)

I guess the Steamplex is unique so the question of the plural noun is academic.
Together with a few F.R. mates back in the '70s I thought the plural of Simplex should be Simplices. :D

Great video! Great Sound! Great Engine!
The Steamplex looks to be a powerhouse, with a 4x4 single cylinder engine.
Please tell us more about the transmission and drivetrain - we know there's a First Gear, how many more?
And can it be shifted on the fly, or must the gear be pre-selected?
