Hi.
I am new to G scale and i have a question. I bought a g scale set it ran last year but
just got it back out and it wont work track is live but if you put the loco on no power
tried other loco same thing remote button is making the receiver click any ideas
 
I'm guessing here that you have an Aristocraft system with a Train Engineer.

Have you checked the battery in the remote handset?

If you haven't used it for a year, it's quite possibly gone flat by now....

It is a aristocraft set, new battery fitted this morning, it is realy strange
that the track is live untill i put the loco on then there is no power on tracks.
Put other bachmann loco on still nothing.

New battery fitted in remote this morning. It is strange that track is live untill i put loco on then track has no power, put other loco on still the same thing. Even tried new track still same. In time i would like to build a big track outdoors but to know about this hobby first. Regards Ken.

That set uses PWM (Pulsed Width Modulation), so if you use a meter set to DC Volts, you will have about 14 Volts on the rails all the time. PWM basically works by feeding a short pulse of power to the motor, i.e. change the frequency. Think of it in radio terms as FM rather than AM as a conventional Controller which varies the voltage.

I would try using a standard controller from an ordinary OO/HO set if you have one to check that the loco is working, as I expect it will.

Other things to check please;

Is the aerial properly connected?

Are you sure the new batteries are okay? Rechargeables are often 1.2V and this might not be enough to operate the set. Make sure they are 1.5V. Check the battery terminals are clean with no corrosion.

Is there an indicator LED on the handset that lights up when you operate the controls. (I have owned a TE a couple of years ago, but it was the black version and not the orange one that you have.)

Sorry if these are obvious questions, but I need to make sure the simple things have been looked at first....
 
Perhaps the front pilot bogie on the loco is reversed. Bachmann picks up power through this and it can get twisted right around and cause a short circuit. Check that the arrow is facing forward
 
Just a thought, if you have a Lil' Critter, have you checked the small switch, which if I remember correctly is the left hand side if the nose end is taken as the front. There are 3 settings, all powered, lights on, off! Very easy to slide the switch with out knowing that you have done so! If this is not the case, what Loco have you got?
