Parts needed for scratch build caboose

Hi all,
I am planning to scratch built a caboose - 1:32 scale (I believe 1 Gauge - I'm new to train stuff!. I have most of the parts and pieces, but I am looking for two items - the wheel and the coupling. See the photos.

Does anyone know of where I could source items like these in more or less the correct scale?

Also, I will eventually need the decals (as you see in the photo..CNR). So ideas on this as well.

I'm new to trains - in the past I have built boats and trams, so excuse the lack of proper terminology.

Thanks, Carl

I presume the model is not yours and you are using it as a guide. As for the couplers try this site,

Or you can use Bachmann, LGB or Aristo couplers if scale appearance isn't crucial.

The brake wheel can most likely be found on Evilbay. Either as a stand alone spare part or from a diner junker caboose or other type of freight car.

Certainly Kadee for couplers but you will need their G1 types (1:32 on 45 mm gauge track) rather than the "G Scale" types they offer. Certainly Stan Cedarleaf, for water slide or Del Taporo of G Scale Graphics, self adhesive vinyl, can help you with producing the custom lettering you require. Be aware that there are a lot of 1:29 scale mainstream products, and even 1:24, current and past from USA Trains and Aristocraft and others (the latter named now defunct but being readily available 2nd hand and are steadily being selectively re released by Bachmann) that could be adapted for your slightly smaller proposed but more orthodox, to some, scale. Those supplying ancilary detailing parts, like bolt heads, grab irons, stoves and chimney's tend to produce for the 1:20.3 (F) scale narrow gauge stock or to 1:24. Like Ozark Miniatures do.

All these suppliers are North American based, although I have used them here in the UK. Quite useful when you have chosen to model D&RGW and logging kit. I dare say if you search online you will find more specialist suppliers who cover standard gauge prototypes modeled at 1:32 (or 10 mm to the foot G1) Max

As for the couplers
Kadee are fine, but Accucraft have some very nicely detailed 1/32nd scale couplers.

For the 'modern' brake wheel, there were a couple of guys looking for them on Largescalecentral.com here in the U.S. Devon made a 3D version which he can scale to 1/32nd, I think. Just send him a message - mailing a small plastic part can't be that expensive! (Especially as you are in Canada.)

Thanks. This helps a lot!

Thanks a lot!

Unfortunately, Stan passed away last year, unexpectedly. There are other decal/transfer suppliers, check this thread.:
Decals. It even mentions a canadian supplier: modeldecaldepot.ca
Very sad to hear that. He did some great work with the ALPS printer. He could create or match just about anything, in my experience. Max

Thanks everyone. These are great leads and suggestions. I will be following up. I am also planning to build the interior of the caboose (with removable roof) - bunk beds, chairs, a stove, other fixtures, so the suggestions will be valuable. I already have a 1:32 scale toilet and sink, but will be looking for other things as well. I'm making it 1:32 because I already have a few locomotives and a passenger car (Occre models I built) at that scale.:)

Most of those bits are easy enough to 3D print. If you can find a 3D model I or I am sure any of the other members who frequent the 3D sections of this site and print 'em out for the cost of postage (I'm in the states)..

Hi Jjjerme,
If someone could print me out a few things that would be much appreciated. There are two things that I need to make it look like a 1930s-1940s vintage caboose. One is a pot-bellied stove (or similar) and 2 brake wheels. I am building this in 1:32 scale to match my Occre locomotives. I did find some brake wheels on eBay. They cost almost nothing - few dollars, but the sellers' postage from the US to Canada is around $20!! I know that is crazy, but it's probably a set price the seller charges for all international mailings. Is this something that you or someone can print 3-D? The size can be a bit larger than 1:32 if needed... See photos (circa 1943) for ideas. Thanks, Carl

Would something like this work:

or this:

It's similar to the one in the photo and can probably be scaled up. As for the brake wheel, just have to find one that looks like what you want, and then we can try and match up an existing 3D perhaps.

What's the postal code for you, I can see what it's costing to send stuff up to Canada - I know it's expensive from the states (my sister in law is up near Calgary.)

That would be great if you could do something. My postal code is M4E 2L8 - it's Toronto.

K. I'll see what shipping is later today and PM you. Though I won't be able to do much this week, doing a bunch of cleaning and prep for daughters birthday this weekend..

I'm not in any rush. I'm working on another tram kit at the moment and it will be another month or so before I start building the caboose. Enjoy your daughter's birthday!

Thanks for offering to help on this.

Regards, Carl

Carl,

Looks like I can ship it between $15-$22 USD. I'll have to see how I can package it once I print it. Once I get the print dialed in, I'll shoot you a PM and we can figure out the logistics. One thing I am experimenting with is using my FDM to print the model and then "painting" the part with UV Resin. It cuts down my finishing time and can give a smoother finish. Though, like any coating, it causes more thickness and can hide some detail. So I can try it on the stove or just leave it the bare FDM plastic.

That's great. I can certainly manage the shipping costs. In terms of what type of finish, I am in your capable hands. Because this is quite small, I would like to preserve as much detail as possible..Let me know how it goes. Thanks again,
Carl
