Pearse Colorado Live Steam Locomotive.

Why are Regner locos supposed to be different?

1. Regner boilers are made of brass, not copper, and

2. Regner actually recommend the occasional use of tap water - I guess that living in Bavaria, where the rock is mostly igneous, they've never heard of sedimentary geology where calcium is the principal constituent. Filters in our locality - Brita, no less - last about two weeks.....

Regner are building me an Emma now. I guess I'll stick to distilled, then.

I think part of the discussion here is also about distilled water and de-ionized water, which some people think are very similar, but as their names suggest are quite different. Simply, distilled water is evaporated water vapour that has been condensed, so in theory is just water, where de-ionized water has had ions removed, which is (a) not a natural state, (b), still contains 'other' contaminates.
My understand is NEVER use di0ionized water, but use distilled water, mine come from a de-humidifier.

They have brass boilers, instead of copper. Regner recommends adding about 5% tap water (to prevent the ions leaching the zinc out of the brass. Did I get that right?)
You can add tap water to de-ionised water, in correct percentages, but I'd rather not chance it myself. Easier to use rain water or from dehumidifiers
