Peco points

Or it could be the orchestra, not following the conductor :)

Hi

I am having trouble with my Peco points. Steam runs Ok over them all but my new Accucraft Baguley (electric) stalls at the frog. I have tried jumper wires but this stiil results in stalling. It sema to happen when the middle unflanged wheel is over the centra of the frog. Any advice gratefully received as this is driving me bonkers!

I have about 40 Peco points that have been in the elements for decades and half of these have been relaid where we now live in East Sussex coast. They are pretty robust but weather and use long before coming south cause the n/s spot welded link straps fracture and the short connector on the moving blades corrodes and becomes insulated. Soldering wires across becomes vital. Also the small ferrous screw on the blade pull bar rust and seize. This should have been s/s or even brass. Peco told me they have thousands and sent me a packet to replace - fair enough OK! Clearances of wheel flanges have been a problem with visiting locos causing jamming and derailments in the past. "At owner's risk" I always said! The LGB skates still stop their locos unless running quite quickly. Varnish can help but there is I believe a metal acid etch paint in black that insulates but yet to find a source. Have other mods to discuss too like making a Peco diamond-made two 1) with their point parts unsulfrog 2) live frog and checks as we used to do in 00 using fibre bases. That was great fun.

I converted all mine to live frogs, after that never a minutes problem.

I don't think the Acc Baguley Diesel has skates, so it could be a couple of things.

Does the centre axle have a bit of vertical play? (Necessary if the track has even a slight hump)
As has been said elsewhere, are the other four wheels all collecting power? (Which is why you need a bit of vertical play on the centre axle)

The person asking this question has not been on the forum since 2019!

Had a bit of an issue with one of my Peco points last Wednesday. The blade came unsoldered from the thingamy that holds it to the moving sleeper. Oh dear brain gone dead for terms this morning. Anyway yesterday I fired up the big soldering iron to effect a repair. This time I pulled the blade rail out of its holding fishplate to affect the repair, effect of the last repair can be seen on the plastic sleeper. So screw safely secured on the platform (black screw on white platform) rail and brass holder on soldering mat. Then brass holder gone, where to a ones guess? So quickly into the workshop to cut and drill a piece of brass as a replacement. This has been soldered to the edge rather than slightly underneath, hence longer length as the original would be due to using a piece of brass from a previously hacked 3 pin LGB loco chassis. Great stuff this, will never be placed back in the loco. Would not remember how to or which is from or which loco!

Note small file mark on stock and blade rail as a marker for where to align the hole. All back in place as can be seen below. Guess what on looking around the line this morning I found the original missing part, so it has gone in my lineside box of bits found on the line. One of these located at each station.
