PIKO METAL WHEELS

Dan,
PIKO wheels are 29.5mm diameter (36161) and 6 wheeler coach wheels (36163) are 35mm diameter. Bachmann / LGB tend to be 31mm.

Thanks Steve. It should not make much of a difference if I equip some of my rolling stock with Piko and some with LGB or Bachmann then.

You may find a slight difference in coupler heights Dan?

All my LGB wagons have been fitted with Lilliput/Bachmann metal wheelsets. I noticed the slight difference in height between those and the Round Robin Boxcar (with standard LGB plastic wheelsets), when it was here over Easter. This did cause the Boxcar to become uncoupled from the train on one occasion.

I would standardise on the same wheelsets for all your stock if possible....

Just remember the Piko price is for 2 axles, with Bachmann you get 4 axles.

Do the maths. a difference of 1.5mm diameter will only lower or raise the coupling height by 0.75mm which won't be noticed.

I use Bachman on most of my stock. Cheapest option as you can do 4axles per packet. Sadly they do not appear o do spoked ones in the LGB size. Get perfect running and as I am a stickler for reliability due to Timetabe running I would not go for anything other than LGB or Bachman. And yes the 1.5mmm difference in coupling height is an issue.

Is this critism? Or sarcasm?

0.75 mm is quite a large tolerance for coupling height and it can be an issue on undulating track for hooks and loops, as I have found from experience.

One way round the problem though, is to fit hooks at both ends of all rolling stock....

...and maybe three in the package that are useable? Gauge, true-ness and round-ness are not a Bachmann forte.

I don't know. I hear the argument for and against mixing wheel brands because of possible coupling problems. I can't imagine that 3/4 of a millimeter which is less than the width of the cursor on my screen would make that much of a difference.
With the exception of my rolling stock slated for shunting, I use hooks on both ends of each piece of rolling stock. So I agree with that method.

Now now lads, rule 8 applys me thinks.

I've heard this said before, but nearly all of my stock is fitted with them and I've never had such a problem.
I've had a few dodgy ones. Put them on a different wagon & had no trouble.

I embarked on a program to fit all my stock with Lilliput/Bachmann (they come from the same source but the Lilliput are slightly cheaper!) wheels last year and I've had no problems either.

If I'd have found any faulty ones, I would have returned them to the shop where I brought them.

If there have been problems in the past, then Bachmann have certainly now resolved these issues....

Hello,
I think the best wheels at a reasonable price are recycled LGB plastic wheels
with a new high-grade steel ring.

Prehm Spielwaren sells them for 4,25 GBP.
at the end of May I´ll be near Duisburg,so I can get some(or some more)there.
If someone needs them.
KInd regards
