Playmobil 5466 Remote Control Crane

I'm looking at the Playmobil R/C crane for use on my railway. Somewhere, on Playmobil's official site, in the description, it indicates that the Infra-red is used to transmit signals to the crane. I've read that Infra-red signals don't do well in daylight. I plan on using the crane under a tree, that provides dense shade.

Any thoughts on the subject would be welcomed.

I think you'll struggle. IR remotes are only really for indoors. I have IR controlled stuff (not train related) that has trouble in my conservatory even on a "normal" day let alone bright summer.

Thanks. That's what I thought. Back to the drawing board then.

My thinking cap is on again :o What if I were to bypass the remote and wire momentary switches directly to the crane. I'd have to open it up and find the wiring, then splice in wires to run to a control panel. It may be a possibility. The reason I'm thinking this way is because I like the way Playmobil stuff is made. Very durable and operationally very good.

Would it be feasible to replace the infra-red with r/c? There are plenty el cheapo made in China cars available in the UK for around a fiver. There must be one that would offer enough channels/functions.

I hadn't thought of that. Yes, there are plenty on Evilbay that are very reasonable.

?Pretty certain I have seen a 'wired' version?

Or did I dream it?

My 5466 crane arrived and I have put it together and tried it out. As with other Playmobil stuff I have, I am impressed with it's construction. The crane operates beautifully. I'll have some pictures soon.

This is the innards from Playmobil Cargo: Loading Terminal 5254, seems to be very similar.
The switch panel will soon be redundant...............

Haven't had the opportunity to take any pictures. I can say, though, the grandchildren played with it outdoors, using the infra-red remote and it performed perfectly.

As long as you are close-by.. It is not so sunny as to burn your retina's out.. or dappled shade, and windy..
Then these things seem to defy all the logic that says they won't work outdoors!
??? ;) :D ;D ;D

Its often the way, all the wisdom is actually not relevant to your own specific circumstances. If it works....... it works. We have a lot of playmobil. And lego. Two toys worth the money in terms of quality and hours actually played with!
