Price comparison website

Thanks a lot for the feedback.

1) Agree. I classify the different models based on their description, so if there is a tendency for the model descriptions to say "steam locomotive", then the model will be classified as "steam locomotive". For the Graham Farish/Dapol models, most of them haven't got types in the description and that's why there aren't any Graham Farish/Dapol locomotives yet.

It should improve over time, as I get more and more data and thereby more descriptions to classify from. Classifying the models manually isn't possible as there are 30,000+ models already

2) It currently shows the models ordered by when they were added to the site, newest first. What could be a better way to show the results?

3) I just checked the scale N steam locomotives and see only steam locomotives, Scale N Steam Locomotives - Model Train Prices - is it on some other page that you see the types being messed up?

Thanks again. Love the feedback I'm getting here, so I can improve the site and make it more useful.

Many thanks for the quick reply. reference your responses to 2 and 3,

2) May be alphabetically by brand, or by classification, a button with "sort by", just a couple of thoughts.

3) Went back and did the search again, and the results were perfect, obviously my "fat fingers" first time around.

:) :) :)

2) A sort button would be great, I'll get that added, But please don't stay awake waiting for it :) It's a bit more complicated to add, so it will probably January before it's ready

I had a wee browse last night and looked for a couple of things this morning.

I am wondering if you really appreciate the mammoth task you have taken on, I am also an 0 gauge modeller who likes LBSCR Stroudley Terrier locos, below are some of the Terrier models produced by Dapol and sold via a few companies.

Good luck with your site.

Good luck with your site.

Thanks. I have added the models to the database, so they will appear on the site when I encounter them in the shops.

Concerning the mammoth task, I must confess I was surprised by the number of models. But programming solves at lot of things, i.e. I'm programming my way out of most of the administration/updating, so I can hopefully concentrate on making functions for the site etc.

Many thanks for joining the forum and for your quick and detailed responses, Mads. I'm glad I haven't had to act as a go-between, it would have slowed down the process a lot.

I looked at the N Gauge today and have a couple of observations:

1) Could not find any Graham Farish or Dapol locomotives.
2) There is no logical order in which the results are shown.
3) When searching for steam locomotives, the results were not exclusive i.e. both electric and diesel locos were shown.

That said, a great site and should prove to be a valuable asset to railway modellers :)
2 & 3, but what fun you can have browsing through the lists, there's bound to be something in there that you didn't realise was vital to your well-being

Its great prices in the states, & not sure why, but they charge a fortune on shipping from the states. I did a like for like on shipping from the US to the UK & was £76.00. For the same thing from the UK to the state £32.00 & this was with the same company. Go figure.

Thank you Mad, your database is very handy.
However, when checking some G scale stuff, I came across the LGB Crocodile at a very good price in shop in Switzerland. But, as usual, when deals are too good, something is wrong. It seems they have a funny way of formatting prices in that shop, CHF 3’590.00

Good catch! They sure have a funny way of formatting prices in that shop, seems to be a Swiss thing as other Swiss shops format in the same way

Thanks a lot for pointing it out, I'll write a fix for this, so these kind of prices aren't too good to be true.

Good catch JimmyB JimmyB

Data was collected wrong for that product, so I have updated the data and now it's scale G in the database as it should be. Just be aware that the product will still show up as scale N until the caching has updated, which takes up to 24 hours .

Thanks a lot for pointing out the error.

I know, since it was my website :)

I had to cancel the project. It was no longer sustainable spending ~200 USD per month to keep the server etc. running.
Thanks for updating us, fully understand why you had to kill the project.
