Run what you want, when you want, how you want. Noone is denying you the fun you want.

But if you use R1 you may have to do something about your track to make that happen. That is why I went ten foot diameter for my tightest curves. So that I could "RUN WHAT I WANT, WHEN I WANT, HOWI WANT, AND IF YOU DON,T LIKE IT ......................"

Conclusion, as this is a thread about this particular loco and not really about R1 versus wider curves. This loco will not be able to navigate R1 or even R2 with flanges, so if you want to run this loco you must either change your track, or go to work and remove the flanges. Nothing is impossible. Perhaps Aristo even will stand by their original idea to include flangeless drivers with the loco. All the better for all, except it's a cost for Aristo.
If it could do r1 even with one flangeless driver (there was never talk about doing this loco with both center drivers flangeless) is even questonable.
 
I think we might have been here before, but the whole business is a fairly delicate balancing act between the size of the garden, the depth of the wallet, the aspirations of the modeller, and the personal compromises that one is prepared to make.

Put that into a spider diagram for analysis, and you'll get something very similar to Rule 8 :rolf::rolf:

Whereas I'm not an avid fan of R1s, and have a minimum ruling curve of 8ft diameter, it was very carefully pointed out to me by the Stainzmaster that in many respects, I'm lucky with the amount of garden that I have available for the WWSR.

The result is that garden railways then tend to polarise in fairly predictable ways, and we need to make sure that we just sit back and enjoy them.

Even us guys with more room aren't immune from overhang and tight squeezes.
Even 10foot diameter is not much good for a Dash-9 if your short on space.

That's why I run trams, all curves are true to prototype. You can even use radius 0. Alyn
 
Hi Not sure if one of the mods can transfer this intresting adapted banter to a new threed but it has gone off topic some what

As for my half pence worth
I had dreams of long sweeping curves and even longer straights with hugh majestic locos billowing clouds of smoke hauling vast rakes of wagons or coaches, but had to settle for something far more practical. im lucky that i have just enough room to use rad 3s though the straights between are rather short but one thing i have learnt on this site is "money and space" is not the key to a Fantastic Garden Railway, there are a few fantastic rad 1 based ones ive seen that proberly cost less than some others spend on one Loco,

SIZE ISNT IMPORTANT IT REALLY IS WHAT YOU DO WITH IT

Sorry but whilst I agree that there are many failings, I can see a very good basis for reworking to a European and Chineese S160. Of course this really depends on how much you may want one, your abilities and how much work you are prepared to undertake.

Yup...No 62 pulling away from Montego Bay.....and just look at the mix of stock in that train, plenty of modelling possibilities there....

The station in Montego Bay was quite small and in a fairly rough part of town. The only time I got to travel by train in Jamaica (in 1980) the last few miles of track into MoBay had suffered storm damage so there was a bus transfer from Anchovy station, a few miles up the line.

Standard gauge. There may have been a few narrow gauge sugar lines in the distant past but other than that the whole island has standard gauge, including the privately owned bauxite lines.

As Steve mentioned there have been a number of schemes to resurrect the railway since it closed in 1992, with interest from Cuba, India and most recently China but so far nothing has come of it. Fortunately some of the track is maintained by the bauxite companies as they still use parts of the national system to bring ore to the coast for export.

Well, I am confused and I think Mr Polk may be as well, I can see the similarity between an S160 and that J.R. number 62, but Aristo's version looks like neither but does have a passing resemblance to J.R. number 54 but that is a 4-8-0 not a 2-8-0? so what has he modelled it on? I think Jamaican Railway modellers (how many are there?) are the winners here.
I hope Aristo sell the motor block/wheels as a seperate part, that could be handy for kit bashing into other engines.

I couldn't agree more Steve.

Confusion may have been caused by pics being posted of locos which were not those of the prototype chosen for the model.   Just part of any Forum I guess.
