You might try to PM DaveHub about this. He drives UK locos for a living, though I think he works for Freightliner, not EWS.

You should have the following
The three small lamps lit at all times.
Day mode should be the lamp on the left looking at the front.
Night mode should be the right when looking at the front.

The reason is is to reduce glare to other drivers coming from the opposite direction as they approach, this done by the lamps being aimed slightly away from centre and towards the side.

I assume aristocraft didnt make all thee dim led light at the same time for some reason.

Hope it helps Steve

Here's a prototype photo of the day setting on a Fliner 66

Unfortunately the exposure time for night photos tends to make them all look the same intensity so they always look like all three are even levels.

The red tail lights would be switched off when hauling anything. I'm afraid it does require a rewire for that as it does on the earlier OO models though they have added a switch for them on some later models in OO.

Hi Ted, yes there are two light cluster versions. The Freightliner 66's have both types as they had several, (3 i think), smaller batches over time including the later low emission variant with extra side doors about 2/3 along the body side. The official name for the smaller lights are marker lights with the main one being the actual headlight.
When they initially introduced the very high intensity headlight on the Voyager multiple units they were blinding all the other drivers so the standard was revised to reduce glare and slowly most other types have been retrofitted with more powerful lamps in the old housings.

Thank you, whatlep, I would have liked to try that, but I cannot. You are a moderator, so perhaps you can explain a few things. Apparently I am so new that I am still in a probationary stage that restricts me from doing many things. Whenever I try, I get a constant circle of messages telling me to log in, and I don't have permission, log in. For instance:
- I can not get a signature that works.
- I can not get an avatar.
- I can not look up other members on a list to find their PM addresses or their public data. [Exception to this - I can look someone up by clicking their name by a message they just posted.]
- I can not even look up the Forum FAQ which might tell me how long to expect this probationary purgatory to last or how to get these various funtions to work.

I'm retired from a security related profession. I completely understand and support the need to vet new members before letting them run rampant through the system especially where data on other members is concerned. So I have no complaints there. But I think denying me a signature or the ability to discover the rules of how the operations of the forum function, may be a bit oversecure.

Anything you can do to illucidate things for me would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ted Tuck, AWRYPres

Elegantly and patiently put sir. I'll admit I wasn't aware that newer members of GSC couldn't do some of the items mentioned, notably look at the FAQs. Those items are goverened solely by the site's owners who are also its programmers, so I'll ask them to look at your post and advise accordingly. Apologies for the inconvenience.

P.S. You've probably found this for yourself by now, but it may explain some of the design differences between class 66 batches: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_66
