Ragleth Mods

Great info Tag. I also prefere black engines but this one does look great. I saved a few of those links for future use for when I start working on my Roundhouse Sammie after the summer. Cant wait to see when your done.

Not finished yet ? more lining and a bit of a tidy to do and the whistle to test in situ. Had to take the pic while I had the light. Tis a bit bright for me ? but then it represents an earlier period and it is also to celebrate a granddaughter so I am sure that she will appreciate Granddad's new engine....:-)

Top notch Tag! :)
To be honest, I've never been a "fan" of the Ragleth (I always prefered the look of Caradoc and even Edrig), but for what it's worth Sir, that makeover has completely changed my mind!

This loco is supposed to be pristine. mine will be a bit different ? although I always make a fuss of the cab with red painted controls with steel handles... Just the whistle tuning to do now before it is packed away...

i quite like 'em because they are easy for a knife and fork modeller such as myself to alter and improve... The quality control is much better these days as well... I am looking forward to doing the Black BR Ragleth (my own this time) and my Alco. I have to dwell a pause however now. Lots going on here and various matters to attend to. A fuller and more considered article will follow later in GardenRail for those who want fuller information.

But most importantly Tag, it's set to run on rails the proper distance apart. :)

Not my sewage farm gauge then Steve:D. I will be up and running at your do in deepest Darset nevertheless. I spread my wheels for anyone...8|

Fantastic job, loads of inspiration. Can't wait for the GR article as well. Just gotta finish writing my masters assignment and I can get back in the workshop.

Found the blacking stuff, cheers.

Finally...why is it always the same chap driving these engines and how come he can stand up in yours. He always falls over in mine...

This particular figure will stand astride the gas to jet pipework ? although one thing you can do is to remove one of the step bolts, open it up to pass an 8BA bolt, then drill up the leg and tap it out. Screw the driver in place with a drop of locktite.

Tag,

Looks totally brilliant!

What size nameplates have you gone for there? Are they Narrow Planet?

Thanks,
Rob

You could always fit the Swift Sixteen step kit, Revolving Spectacle Window Set or Cow catcher ??
Under, detailing.

No ? this is not my engine and if it was I would use small black backed plates. These are the standard John Lythgoe range which are kept in stock - these cover most wife/girlfriend choices but are a bit big for my taste..

>> Have you fitted the spec plate kit on an already painted engine however??

I did, or at least tried to.
Not a good idea! (for me)

I do have an idea for this. Something that I used many years ago on 'Chippy Joe', a Merlin Hunslet. This involves turning the lip off the standard rings, so that it turns easily in the hole, then drilling through across the ring 1.5 mill and soldering 1.5 mil rod into either end. Push the ACME glazing in and then make up a set of four brackets, drilling through to fix to the spec plate with 10BA hex head bolts. The fenestration will then turn very easily and one can leave them open to show that they work. I am gonna try this on my black Ragleth which I shall start this Autumn (my Alco is first for the workshop).

Ingenious, I like it!

Any more questions on this I will answer after Tuesday.....busy coupla days coming up...

Yes, I have fitted a window set to a painted model, it is not to hard with careful use of a Dremel.

But my suggestions were aimed at the original first post asking about 'add-on's' for a Ragleth :)
