Remote uncoupling van, massoth uncouplers.

I am equipping some of my locos with the massoth uncouplers but I also wanted to be able to uncouple odd vans from the train too. I decided the answer was to equip a couple of wagons with two uncouplers and a decoder so I could drop off different selections of wagons in the sidings.
Here's the concept

List of bits
1 LGB wagon or van
1 pack of massoth uncouplers (includes two couplings)
Ball bearing wheels.
Massoth 8 function accessory decoder
and an extra bit of fun
Massoth Servo voltage regulator
Rc mini servo.

I removed the wheels and drilled a hole to lock the swinging unit in place as I have all R3 curves. I also drilled out the pivot to allow the wiring through.

I used some comb binders chopped up to stop the cabling dangling down

Here's the neat little uncoupler unit

and here's what's hideen inside. The servo is just attached with a sticky pad and a wire linkage to the door.

Excellent idea, Paul. Has given me the idea to make up a van with rc controlled uncouplers rather than attempting to attach servos to some of the locos.
Just a quick idea with the side door, would it work with a servo slower to have the door slide open slowly?

Nice work Paul!

I especially like the use of the comb binder for the cabling....

fantastic idea, well executed as well, top job!

Paul,
Great!

To change the servo speed adjust CV127 - 1 = fast, 16 = slow

Great work! I really love this product, now have 2 locos with them for my shunting layout. I am seriously thinking about a box van now too. You are a bad/good influence!

Well done Paul,

very interesting idea to install uncouplers in a wagon in the middle of a train. Nice work with the servo. I use servos in an H0 layout with a servo decoder where you can program the turning speed of a servo and the A and B positions or the start and finish positions. I guess your are doing the same here, connecting the servo to function outputs A7 or A8, then you have to tune the CV121, 122 &123 for A7 or CV124, 125, & 126 for A8 and the turning speed I believe it is set with CV 127, if it is programmed to 1 it is fast speed, you have to increase it up to a max. of 16 to notice the difference.

I hope it works
Best regards
Jose

Lets see, I've got 20 coaches and 36 wagons plus 40 odd loks.....bu**er thats a lot of uncouplers..............
Yeah that's what I thought but then I had a cunning plan ;)
Look at how you run your trains and you'll probably find 90% of the time you only need one uncoupler on a loco if you have a layout with a continuous run or turntables. If you only run certain engines on freight and shunting then those are the ones to concentrate on. Similarly with coaches you might want to split a set in the same place each time so you find you probably only need to equip around a third of the stock to have a lot of flexibility or a fifth for quite a bit of flexibility.
I'm only equipping the Harz steamers with uncouplers on the rear as they just need to uncouple to take water but not run round all the time. With stock the ball bearing wheels are an expensive option but add a lot of weight too which is good for contact.
Wheels £30, decoder £28 and couplings effectively £32 each so it's not cheap but especially for a show layout or one in the garden where you don't want to lean down all the time they are a nice option.

I looked at the video and it looks more realistic now.
Cheers
Jose

A different take on the auto uncoupling, saves fitting every loco.

Like the opening door option as well.

That's much better, not so much of a guillotine action now :D
