These pictures are of my Sabre steam Annette, no 040 costing £2682.00. It
came without my credit card receipts, without a bill of sale or a boiler
certificate (in accordance with the SEP component of the EEC Pressure Vessel
Regulation) or flue-brush.
The locomotive arrived with the packing in good unmarked condition. The
bodyshell is twisted, as is the Roundhouse chassis. The feedwater bypass
pipe fouled the running gear. The boiler is set at an angle across the
chassis (see photo) because the smokebox has been fitted off to one side and
at an angle. The chimney is tilted to the left. The coal bunkers do not fit
properly. There is green acid staining in the tanks where the soldering has
not been properly cleaned. The feedwater water bypass fouled the wheels and
the feedwater tubing to the pump is bent around the centre axle and
continuously fouls.
The paintwork is appalling. One can see on the photographs that paint has
been applied over dirt. It would also seem to have been applied without etch
primer and was already coming off on receipt.
Mr Cooper told me that the locomotive had left in perfect condition after
two comprehensive tests and a coal firing.
An attempt was made to steam this locomotive with the help of Raif Copley
and David Pinniger both very experienced with coal firing.
The whistle valve does not work properly causing water and steam leaks. The
water gauge leaks. The blower was blocked with solder (cleared for me by
Raif Copely) and so was not tested with coal before delivery. Even with the
blower cleared and working, the locomotive (with the combined efforts of
Raif and David Pinniger) would only run briefly (in forward gear only).
Mr Cooper will not refund my money because the loco had been looked at by a
third party ie the help I received from Raif and David. He has 'kindly'
offered to help with these problems despite me 'negating' the warranty.
Given the truly appalling condition of the locomotive as delivered, and on
information received about other recent Sabre locomotives, I have serious
doubts about Mr Cooper's ability to address these problems. This (and
concerns about business practice other than the purely engineering) has
meant that I have decided to have the locomotive properly rebuilt by a
proven engineer rather than return it. I really cannot afford to lose the
whole of the money paid to Sabre.
I am aware that I am not the only one to do this.
