Sandwich boxes and split box axles

Can you put the type of axle that has screw on wheels in a sandwich box, The reason I ask is i've aquired several chassis with plastic valve gear, that I want to fit with metal gear, I bought some Stainz in bits from germany that need blocks, the original split boxes were wrecked

I will say yes because LGB actually did it with the 2095 type diesels which require the screw-type axles to receive the connecting rod assemblies. I learned this when my bargain purchase sandwich- version 2096 arrived needing some gear replacement; my repair is now time-proven.

I've just come across a 20th Anniversary tram (1988) with a sandwich gear box & screw on wheels. These are original fittings.
