Hi everyone. This is my first thread. I thought I would share some pictures of my coal cars. I am starting into g scale . My railroad is going to be on a tight budget. So I will be scratch building alot. My railroad will probably drive rivit counters crazy but I will enjoy it. I had some old trucks from some cheap new bright cars to start with

I built a box and took a saw blade and racked across the wood to rough it up. I'm still working on my weathering .

I gave the box a wash of grey . Then a wash of black . I have also been experimenting with mold making. I couldn't find anywhere to buy rivit strips so I used woodland seanic latex rubber and made my own .I took the mold from a old train car I had.

I cut the edges off on the molds and glued them to the corners . It was starting to take shape.

I then gave the whole thing a light mist of flat black spray paint. Cheap and easy little coal car. I think it turned out pretty good. I want to have six of them I have built 3 so far.

Tight budget or not, what you are doing is very prototypical - most roads built their own stock to suit their needs! Plus, it's a very enjoyable and satisfying process. Looking very good!

I like the look of those cars.

I have a Big Hustler and made some gravel skips for it, mine is battery R/C.
I hid all my batteries, motor driver and sound card (under controller) in the skips.
Attached pdf shows the skips, the motor controller is going to be replaced with a Pololu 18V7 controller shortly as the current one is not working the way that I like it to.

Thanks for the pictures. Great idea. I think I will try this.

Good start Jack!

And welcome to the forum....

Thanks everyone. I'm hooked on this hobby. This is a cheap toy train I had laying around. I wanted to practice some weathering on it before I attempted to weather my nicer train. It turned out pretty good for my first attempt. I'm still learning..

Is that the one where you push the top of the dome to start/stop it? I had one as a back-up if track power failed on my trailer line.

Your repaint transforms it - so I reckon you'll well be able to tackle other stock.

Here's the one I used to have ...
Loco Roster (2).JPG

I sold mine on - but found it quite a useful loco.

Yes that is the same loco. It runs great it is loud running but I put a Bluetooth speaker in a car behind with chuff sound to cover it up.

You're a bit (well, a lot) more advanced technology-wise than I am!

I don't have money for expenses sound systems . I found an app that has all the train sounds. And put a Bluetooth speaker in a car . And you control it from your phone. It's called train companion. 2.99$us. on Google play..
