Some new buildings for Beaver Creek

As the weather has been less than wonderful for the last few months, besides a couple of very nice interludes, I have spent a bit of time in the 'workshop' on various projects.
Like a lot of us, I have a long list of half completed endeavours but still decided to start a new one and create, replace or 'tart-up some buildings. The extent of my modelling will be no way near some of the great efforts shown on this iste but there will be a lot of different materials used from plastic kitbashing to scratch build from wood.
building one:
THE NEW DINER
One building that has been due for replacement is 'Lorraine's Diner'. The original 5 year-old diner utilised an old Plko 'Pilkington' building that was a bit of an odd structure. I had tarted up the bland structure and added an 'soda' kiosk to give a little more interest but the site was always a little 'messy' and not too convincing. Also, as the manager of the diner, Lorraine, had made good business in the food trade she has decided to invest in new premises.

This is now replaced with the new one...as it was:

I had got one of the Piko 'Peter's Motorcycle shop' buildings from ebay very cheaply some time back with the idea of finding a place for it somewhere. Its shape lent itself to being a good basis for a diner (in fact Piko do it as a diner in different colours)

Peters bike shop: This shows the original colour scheme of the kit.

I decided to change the colour scheme to a total stainless steel jobbie and use my own detailing to make it personalised. I had bought a job lot of passenger carriage seats for another project but with a bit of paint and silver detailing they would be ideal for use in a diner. I made up some tables from scraps and built the serving bar from piko bits and bobs. I added a 'restroom', a drinks display/sales point and and telephone etc.
Internal details:

Nearly all diners have a 'kitchen area' which is usually not a stylish edifice and is stuck onto the main building like a 'carbuncle' I kit-bashed this from odd bits of walls etc from other finished kits. I will add cooker and sink details later.
The kitchen:

I decided to use LED strips to simulate the interior neon and fluorescent lighting so I used some of the cheap waterproof 5m roll that I had got from Fleabay. It works from about 8 volts up to 19v so is just right
Led lighting: (The original orange colour of the roof can be seen)

The next thing was for a new 'Lorraine's Diner' sign...this just had to be internally lit. Again the LED strips were implemented. The LEDs had to be encased in a sandwich of two plates. For the edging around the plates, I used Plastistruct angle with knotches cut out so that I could easily form it around the curved edge.
Some of the back, of the front facing translucent plate, was 'blacked out' to kill the light from any LEDs that were in the wrong position on the strips when shining through the new sign.

I knocked up a new design for the sign in QuarkXpress using a 'neon' font and a couple of 'OPEN 24 HOURS' graphics. This was printed out on laser decal paper and ten tested while clamped on the front plate. Then the decal was affixed to the front plate, the 'sandwich stick together, sealed and then wired through the roof to the strips inside and mounted onto the roof posts.

The completed sign on the diner. The light 'leaking' through where the wall meets the roof will be stopped when the roof is firmly fixed on.

Now the 'site' needs to be enlarged for a carpark and for the extra depth of the new diner.

Re:Some new buildings for Beavercreek

I also wanted a juke box so found a picture of a 40's/50s one on t'internet and stuck a printout onto some scrap pieces.

There will be a coke dispensing machine and some other bits and bobs to give a bit of atmosphere. Also I might rig up some 'cover' awnings for the parked cars. Not sure if the little kiosk will feature again though.

Re:Some new buildings for Beavercreek

Well impressed Mike. Particularly the Flourescent signage.

Re:Some new buildings for Beavercreek

That's really nice and very effective. Think the Mrs is getting the hump with all the ideas I keep getting from here :D

Re:Some new buildings for Beavercreek

Very nice job, I do like the illuminations....

Re:Some new buildings for Beavercreek

Excellent as always Mike ...one thing missing.....The beer bellied cop picking up his lunch while eying up the dodgy couple in the corner ....no seriously the people you have in there really fit the bill cant wait to see it in place

Re:Some new buildings for Beavercreek

Nice work Mike....

Re:Some new buildings for Beavercreek

Excellent job Mike, really like that.

I know this is very new, but how do you get on with detailed interiors in outdoor buildings? I find that if I seal mine up without any openings, they're nearly always full of moisture (I recently found that my "sealed" camping coach was half full of water). Whereas, if I leave a door or window open, it some becomes home to a colony of various spiders and insects, and everything is covered in cobwebs?

looks very nice , love the details:thumbup:

Thanks for the encouraging comments lads. I know that this one was only a customisation of a standard Piko kit but I will post some piccies of my new and newly updated homemade wood buildings but they are nowhere near to Ray's absolutely stunning modelling!

Hi Mel.
I do have troubles with the dreaded spiders but have found that, if I want a building totally 'sealed' I leave just very tiny holes for moisture to get out with a very small mesh over them and also spray the interior with strong anti bug stuff then I can get away without insect intrusion.
If I want the door open a little for effect, then I have to worry about spiders, snails and vagrant frogs/toads taking up residence. (snails stripped my paper curtains from inside a few buildings) so I use snail pellets outside the door sprayed grey (sorry to the conservationists), strong bug spray (sorry again!) and a wedge on the door to stop the frogs and toads from gate crashing their way in.
There are still a few cobwebs after a year or two but as my roofs are semi-removable, the webs can be cleaned away with a 'twiddle' stick.

The gap that can be seen between the wall and roof with light leakage in one of the photos will be sealed with bath sealant so that will not be an entry point for any little beasties. The sealant is easy to slice through if I have to remove the roof in the future.

Great stuff Mike - and really useful info also, just what forums are all about.

Re:Some new buildings for Beavercreek

Looks terrific, Mike, will look forward to seeing it for real at your next open day!

You'll have the Massoth kit all up and running by then, won't you....? ;)

Jon.

Here are a couple of shots of the cleared and enlarged old diner site. The yellow dotted line shows where the rock boundary was and the second shot shows the new road that 'appears' from Arrowhead township. The road hopefully will end up at the car park by the new diner......I might have to push back the rocks even further!

Re:Some new buildings for Beavercreek

Now onto the new or re-done wooden buildings, the 'Mercantile Store' and the revamped 'Heinz Pickle factory'

First the 'Mercantile Store'. I have to knock up the signs for this and also the revamped Heinz buildings. There will be no 'neon' (led) signs for these though!

The basic structure is built using wood strips on a basic frame of uprights every 7cm or so. The roof is made of plywood sheets on joists spaced every 7cms or so. For the roof covering I have used a mixture of real miniature cedar shingles and 'Precision Plastics' preformed 'shakes' sheets (I ran out of the plastic sheets). The real hard bit was painting the roof so that both types of material blended and looked as though it was aging but not totally greyed yet. I used powder pigments in isopropyl alcohol and then a few spray coats of "Montana' matte varnish finishing with a coat of Testors Dullcote spray varnish. I concentrated more varnish on the real shingles to make them weatherproof.
I put strips of self adhesive 'draught excluder' between the joists where the roof rests the front and back walls. This is to help keep the spiders out although the doors are not totally tight but snails will not get in!
The base is a wooden one made of wood strips on bearers and then covered with 'Precision Plastics old floorboards' sheet. I also covered the bottom of the wooden base with plastic sheeting to protect from the damp (although it is actually positioned on gravel to help drainage).
There are two 'rooms and lights internally as well as the ones outside. As the idea was not to really see anything going on inside there is very little detailing except for a desk and odds and ends.
The windows are made up from what I could find in my 'odds and ends' bin. I will be fitting some 'old' curtains inside the windows, a store name board and some signs and adverts on the outside. I have thought about adding a 'painted' sign onto the roof but may keep that for the New farm barn when that farm area gets my attention.
The photo has also shown up the crooked door lintel! That will need to be fixed or maybe it adds a bit of atmosphere...not too sure though 8|

The petrol pump is a homemade jobby by the venerable 'Giles' (C&S)

Re:Some new buildings for Beavercreek

Onwards to the revamping of the 'Heinz Pickle' Factory.
When I first started the G scale thing I knew that I wanted detail and the first after the trees would be buildings. I saw all of the Pola and Piko jobs but they would have to be saved up for as second hand ones on Fleabay were not cropping up regularly then. My other option was to build them myself. I looked on ebay and the web for ideas of what had been done already and plumped for a Heinz Pickle factory that someone in the states had done. It was okay as a space filler and sat there for for five years but began to look a bit 'rough and ready as gradually other more refined and detailed ones appeared on the railway.

Well it was time that this old warhorse was given a facelift and had more detail added. It is really an heavy hulk of wood bits, glued and nailed ..no finesse but very quickly knocked together!
For the revamp I have refaced the walls using 'Precision Plastics siding', recovered the roof with 'Precision Plastics steel roof' and used gaffer tape for the 'flashing', added new windows and some doors for the pickle boiling room from the parts bin, guttering, planked boardwalk, steps etc and built a water tower . I also knocked up a generator shed as the electricity supply in the 'Arbour Summit ' area is inconsistent to say the least.
I still have to do the signs and name plates etc and add a couple more features. The exterior lights were added (internal ones were already in the pickle boiling room) and have led bulbs which give a nice 'cone' of light.
