How do you find the buildings standing up to the weather?
Hi Ross
The plastic ones (like the new diner) are obviously no problem as long as they have watertight rooves if there is any wiring etc. The only thing is the sun's effect on the laser decal detailing that I use. but a few coats of UV matte varnish help them to last a few years with not too much fading.
The wooden ones are interesting. The ones made from good rot resistant wood are great as long as the roof is watertight, the base is protected with well drained gravel underneath and a protective plastic membrane (with a few drainage holes just in case) tacked to the underside. The only wooden buildings that have given me any jip are the ones where they have any part made from basewood or other softwood and has got continually wet or they have made continual contact with damp earth. But for these more vulnerable ones I have made some protective plastic covers from sections poly tunnel for use in heavy rainfall.
The Heinz building is just really plywood and softwood with a load of preservative and when I started working on the revamp I noticed that the only bit that has any rot is where a corner had been not over gravel and was in contact with earth that has got damp.

Sounds good. Have noted your ideas. TA!
The other way is to mount them on strong plastic bases such as the plastic fronted foamboard used in advertising signs.......Like a few guys on this forum, I've got a local firm who give me offcuts 3mm, 6mm and 10mm thick

Just needs some rock and roll on the jukebox now

Hi Colin

The juke box is in and I am considering getting a very very cheap little SD card mp3 player to play some 40's and 50's tracks with possibly a proximity photo-switch....Mmmmm maybe a step too far!

Fantastic work Mike  really like the new Lorraines diner very nice light effects must look great in the dark  and the pickle factory looks stunning :thumbup::thumbup:

The juke box has been made and placed in situ. It is really only a picture from the net stuck onto a block for the body. But through the window it does not look too bad. I made it a bit smaller as there is not a lot of room in the diner! A full scale diner would have been twice as long and not have fitted into the site. Our hobby is one of continual scale compression compromise.

In the future am going to try to rig up the 'EAT' sign with LED system but this is quite small and I will not be able to use the self adhesive LED strip that I used for the name sign. I am also going to rig up a separate smaller 'name' sign to be placed away from the diner to attract 'passing' trade.

Now to site the diner into the larger space cleared for it, link up the power for the lighting and lay the the asphalt area for the punter's automobiles.

Te hee, I have all of ZZ Tops albums and have seen them live a couple of times..a great boogie band
If I do get a little cheapo mp3 player and amplifier to fit behind the diner, it will have to be hits from 40's and 50's!

Nice work on the building's Mike, bit surprized you was going for the hit tune's of the 40s and 50s I would have thought hit's from the 20s would have been more of your era:)

As I suggested on Sunday, Mike - you need Elvis singing that old Engine Driver's ballad, "Love me Tender"....... ;)

Arrow Head is due for a total makeover including the replacing of the shuttle line with a reverse loop. But in the interim it was in desperate need of a hotel. Now I could have done a scratch build one (it would not have in anyway compared to Ray's superlative work), but I decided to to a kit-bash instead.
I used one Piko 'Blackhorse Saloon' kit which I had got dirt cheap some time back and also three of the little 1:29 piko stores that I got as a used lot for pennies.
I basically painted all the walls and windows, replaced the doors and then 'bashed' the three 1:29 buildings together to make the top floor.
I added 'embelishments' for a bit of customisation such as the pilasters, roof vents, roof access turret, flag poles etc.
Each level is divided up into rooms, has lighting in each room and corridors as well as outside.

It does still need the curtains and I have made these out of paper which I have neavily impregnated with matt varnish as no matter how I have tried, slugs get in and eat ordinary paper ones!!

Oh yes and I made up a backdrop from a photie which a friendly local sign maker printed up for me at 10 foot by 6 foot
