Sources of Butane.

It would appear that B&Q superstores have stopped stocking Butae cartridges. I Know rhat some dealers sell at shows but it is not always practical to attend for Butane purchase. Wickes also have stopped stocking Butane.
There are plenty of sources for the Butane/Propane mix.
It would appear that Argos stock Butane but their website doesn't give details as to the fitting available.
Does any body have other sources? ( I don't mind buying half a dozen at a time!)

I've started refilling mine from Calor gas bottles.
Made up an adaptor from a drawing on the 16mm eGroup.
This fits on a 4.5Kg butane bottle and usually fills about 12 - 14 canisters at about £1.50 each.

Must say I have used either butane or 70/30 butane/propane depending on the weather.
Never noticed any significant difference in loco performance, just slightly easier lighting up.
Locos are from Roundhouse, Accucraft, Maxwell Hemmens and IP Jane.

A search on the Focus website yielded no results! Unfortunately the local Focus store were bought by Wickes and the nearest is 17 miles away , otherwise I would just go and look.
You may have just bought the last of their stock!?

As a caravanner I use butane regularly, albeit in larger tins than you are used to. Many 'vanners use propane as well because it performs better at low temperatures (I believe liquid butane turns to jelly when it gets too cold), but otherwise performs much the same. What I'm saying is you shouldn't have any problems using the butane/propane mix.

I think Screwfix do both butane and mix. Not sure how they dilever it, as to post flammable substances it is not legal. Unless, of course, you have one of their trade counters locally. Unfortunately I don't, my nearest is Shrewbury.

Screwfix use a courier, not the post office. So flammable cargoes are at the discretion of the courier company and money wins.

Sounds familiar; rules and regulation stiffling public services for the benefit of private enterprise.

I managed to buy some Butane from my Local Halfords today. It came in the 485ml rather than 600ml cans as seen in the attached picture. Not sure if this is significant, they only had 4 cans that I bought at £3.29 each.

Sorry if you get a crooked neck looking at this picture. It was corrected in my Mac Preview. I think that I have had this occur on this site before with pictures that I have corrected in Preview. Computers don't you just love em!

I prefer to use Butane only in the Summer due to the higher presures involved when the Propane Mixtures get to in the heat. However in the Winter I am happy to use the Propane Mixes.

With the imminent arrival of my first butane fired loco, I'm trying to source butane cans. I seem to be able to get hold of the "GoSystems" cans for about £4.45 that have the screw top quite easily. However, there are also available, various other makes for about half that price that have a different top. I have also found an adapter, that converts the other top to a screw type, that the extender might fit to refill the loco (something like this one: http://www.dinodirect.com/cans-gas-...a=X&ei=aybDT9iSNIyU8gOKs9D1Cg&ved=0CHkQgwgwAw < Link To http://www.dinodirect.com...s9D1Cg&ved=0CHkQgwgwAw ). I don't have the loco or the gas can extender, so I don't know if the adapter would work. How do you seasoned pro's do it? Pay more for the cans with the right top, or go for the alternatives?

I can see the sense in using the very large bottles, makes it cheaper, but I think the connector is way beyond my means. I don't think I'll be using that much gas as I don't even have my own layout yet.

Cheers all
Bill

Yes, Halfords seem a regular stockist of butane in two can sizes, but they don't carry large stocks - I cleaned out my local branch last week (sorry, folks, if you live in the Godalming area); on the other hand, Robert Dyas seem to have given up stocking any gas canisters which will take a screw fitting.

GRS i believe sell both the types of adaptors for the different types of gas cans

I got one an adapter for the push on type camping stove cans from Chuffed 2 Bits at Merstham for £6.95 which seems to be a good price compared to other places. These cans seem to available from quite a few places cheeply now.

Try your friendly neighborhood Asian food market.

My local DIY shop, a treasure trove' of stuff that is not stocked in by the DIY supermarkets stocks 3 different types and fittings of cartridges and in 2 different sizes.
