Sources of Butane.

I get mine from a local car/camping shop, as used in gas camping stoves. With the nozzle from chuffed 2 bits they make very cheap gas!

When all else fails my local Poundland is selling cigarette lighter re-fill cans for .......................... well £1 of course.
Small but perfectly formed.

Wilkinsons do Parasene gas cartridges quite cheeply, use them in my butane torchs

Here at the CFR we buy Butane gas by the box of 28 off ebay. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/190656849452?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649
At that price it works out at less than £1 a can.

We have bought the adapters from Chuffed2Bits and it all works fine. http://www.chuffed2bits.com/page9.html
Never had any problems with it in 4 months of using it and touch wood we won't in the future! :rolf:

Beware - these adaptors vary in design.
I bought one via evilbuy, and found it's designed to be mounted on the cooker and accept a screw on canister.
Thus the adaptor is "straight through" and does not shut off the gas.

Do the C2B adaptors actually lock on to the can, or do you need to use both hands to hold the can and the adaptor?

C2B adaptors are a push fit to the can and you can turn it upside-down without it falling off. If you shake the can then the adapter does fly off, so make sure that you are pointing it at someone you don't like, however I think that gassing the engines without shaking the can is better as you are less likely to get dirt blocking the jet. Could be wrong. At first it's different to fill locos using the push fit as they move around a bit more than the screw fit but after a few goes you get the hang of it.

Chuffed to bits is stock taking at the moment, so I've ordered an adapter off eBay, I think it's straight thru too. I'm hoping that the adapter I have for screw threads will fit on this adapter....fingers crossed.

If you have ordered one of the gold and black ones they do have an automatic shut-off inside, they are not "straight through" and they have a positive lock on to the top of the can with no danger at all of it falling off. I have four different screw thread gas adaptors and they all fit on to mine, as does my blowlamp. In fact, I'm going to order another one right now!

Just started using my C2B adapter and am now able to use the cheaper non-screw-in cartriges. Bought my gas from the local camping supplies shop in Bicester, 4 for £6. Will take a look at the Ebay suppliers suggested for even cheaper prices. Yes, C2B adapter loose fit but no leaks (ooh er missus).

Note regarding "Go System" brand cannister gas. Heard mutterings at my local 16mm group steam up this weekend that this brand is notrious for having a lot of "crud"in it and users suffering blocked jets as a result. This was backed up emphaticly by an assistant at GRS yesterday and apparently Roundhouse have been advising against this brands use with thier locomotives for a while.

I have had a lot of problems with blocked jets using this make in the past. This could also be manufacturing faults with the gas tanks (Chinese famous for leaving a lot of flux behind in the tank soldering process).

Tip from the camping gas supplier - store your cannisters upside down (don't shake then up !) and give them a quick blow through the adaptor before connecting to the tank (keeping them upside down) before filling. Crud gone. Seems obvious once one is told !

If you are going to buy in quanity just be careful where you store them as garden sheds can get rather hot and also not a great idea in the house either unless in a fire restistant cupboard.

Thanks guys! I know I hijacked someone else's thread, but it's been so useful. Some really great advice. I'll probably put some of it up on my website at some point to keep it together in one place.

I might have to get one of the chuffed to bits adapters, they'll make it quite a bit cheaper.

Peveril is arriving today, so it's all in good time.

Cheers again,

Bill

I've bought the Far East type of camping stove cans from my local Wing Yip Chinese supermarket / cash and carry. They have two brands and the one I have now is Japanese made and better quality than the Chinese ones mentioned above.

The gellert adapter arrived. It fits nicely on the cans, but is unfortunately straight through. Put a roundhouse screw can adapter on, but alas still straight through when tightened. Gonna try using the thread as a valve. Otherwise need another solution.

Peveril arrived yesterday, and when I got her home I laid my 6 pieces of flexi track out and laid them across the patio. I diligently followed all the instructions and eventually had a great little steam up. This is my first gas fired loco, and I now have a question.

I put the roundhouse screw adapter nozzel onto the can of GoSystem gas and tried to fill up my loco. At first nothing. Then I pressed a little harder, and gas definitely started coming out. Then nothing again. So I pressed harder and gas definitely came out, but quite a lot of liquid gas also came out from around the screw fitting. So I tightened the adapter and tried again. I must have taken it apart and put it back on 4 or 5 times before I felt it was actually filling the loco, not dripping all over the place. I don't really know what I did yo make it work in the end.

Any ideas or experience the same? It may be that the adapter wasn't on properly, but it was very tight. I don't know if it went on further each time.

I did get the loco filled and she ran lovely. Shame I only have 6 yards of straight track. One day...

Cheers,

Bill

I had the same problem with my first roundhouse adapter. Gas leaked everywhere. I spoke to john at trackshack who supplied it and he put another in the post. The replacement works fine. I still puzzled as to how it was faulty, possibly the thread.

Therefore i conclude its the adapter not you.

Ordered the gold & black adaptor from China via evilbuy, £4.99 post free.
A week later the seller was no longer registered.
The adaptor eventually arrived though.
Fits as Tony describes, but leaks liquid gas when inverted to fill the loco.
Tried an O ring, no go - two O rings make the adaptor wobbly on the can, and still leaks.
Not worth sending back to China.
Reluctant to buy another.
Shall stick to refilling screw top canisters from Calor Gas bottles.
