Stainz lighting

As I reassemble little snippets of advice will pop up - worth mentioning, you never know, some of you might be as dim as me, unlikely, I know. Replacing the chimney was a very awkward bit. The snag is the brown and black wires have to be poked away from the chimney hole, and this was done most unprofessionally. What with poking the wires out oif the way, and then the chimney spindle catching nipping them time after time, I started to tear the plastic insulation. I've got the thing in now, but I am not at all happen about the state of those two wires either side of the chimney spindle. It has just added another vulnerable point. I will continue and pretend everything is OK, but if the light fails I will think seriously about routing those two wires down the inside of the boiler to keep them away from any snagging of this nature, maybe even think of boring a hole in the backplate and provide a sheath of some sort. You all with me? Anyway, here we are, Friday morning, things look OK so far, eh?

Further to my last re wiring routing, I went back through all the helpful pictures and diagrams you guys posted just to make sure I am reassembling correctly and am noticing the rather large differences in various models, and my idea of re-routing wiring was in fact incorporated in later versions.
 
I hope you'll excuse me if I ramble on during this reassembly. I'm washing all the parts now but I think before I go much further I now have to mate the motor bloc to the body, and this is a crucial stage. when it comes to all the bits and pieces, where do they go, and what about all these screws, well, I have another No 2 to hand and I think of the same vintage so that is going to be a great help.
anyway, bit of a brake, no break, it is Friday so you know what asda be done, oh get on with it
 
Well, there it is, slipped into place as smooth as Betty Grable's legs slipped into a pair of nylon stockings. Who's Betty Grable? Oh come on, come on.
And we have a front pilot, a working one. Now just to fit the various bits and the skates and we're nearly ready, but there is a little bit of paint touch up to be done.
 
Is that using the old light or the new one, Cyril?
Either way, very glad to see it working! :thumbup:

Ahh, I think you may have to partially remove the chimney in order to fit the front coupling.
The good news is that you'll only have to lift it an inch or so so no fiddling with the light wires, but if the original problem was caused by a pinch point alongside the chimney there's a small chance of it recurring when you disturb the chimney.
 
Yes I was anticipating that Neil, but thanks for mentioning it, I do expect that at some time in the not too distant future either the trapping of the wires or the original fault which of course could return at any time and out will go the light. However, I am ready for this now, and if I have to go back inside and fiddle with the wires I would certainly re-route them to avoid a recurrence. I have thanks to Jon at least one new bulb and holder in stock, (that answers your query Jon, this is still the old one)I have a feeling there may be another coming, getting a bit confused by this whole thing, and in any case, as a 100% backup Sparky and I have come to an agreement about a new, well, pre-owned, replacement Stainz. All I have to do now is explain that to 'er indoors.

oooooooooooooh 'eck as like, I knew we were going to run into trouble. Slowly the reassembly is taking place, and every time I do some work, screw in a screw and so on I do a little test to make sure the pilot light is working. So what's the problem? I only have as far as I can see one set of cab steps to put on, needs just one screw, then the skates, two screws with washers. But! I have no less than seven screws left! Better have another look at the exploded diagrams, I reckon
 
OK found enough holes now, only that cab step and the skates to put on, although this paricualr screw has gone in at a nasty angle which suggests somehting not lined up correctly. However just done a running test and apart from the front snowplough/stoneguard not sitting properly all seems to be running well. Just about to finalise the saga of the Stainz

The black no1 stainz is packed up ready to go to you, along with several bulbs, a boiler wheel and a diode unit

Well that's brilliant old chap, I will now have a reasonable set of spares also which will ensure my four Stainzes will run well into the next decade. The repaired one is running fine now, so far no blinking of the front pilot, only to put on the last set of cab step, the skates (although it runs well enough without them) and that funny chimney thing which I think is the exhaust from the coffee pot. You shpould get the cheque tomorrow
What an exciting week it has been, dismanlting and re-assembling a Stainz. Now, where's that ailing UP Big Boy? :laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:
