THE DURABLE STAINZ

It never ceases to surprise me how much of a powerhouse the LGB Stainz locos are. I have an assortment of LGB starter type locos. Both steam and diesel. However, some of the other locos, even though they may share the same motor block as the Stainz, just don't have the b'lls to pull like the Stainz.
Just an observation.

Yes Dan I have to agree. My Stainz will easily out pull my Carpet Hoovers, don't know how, but they do.

Thats a new one to me. I tried guessing what a Carpet Hoover is, but all I come up with is something that needs it's bag emptied once in awhile.:rolf:

the stainz is a joy -
a carefree train, a small price

have 5-3 green, black K-3, one brown #2

easy to handle and put on the track

resists tumbles and derailing

runs in the rain-plows snow
little fear of theft

my understanding is that as the flagship on which the reputation of LGB founded -the balance and center of gravity was carefully engineered

wish they would offer an uber stainz with synch smoke, sound and constant lighting-but then it wouldnt be everything i love about it right?

Love the Stainz.....the real deal tho are the 2015/7s. Stainz motor block and weight....with an equally heavy powered tender!

I must agree. I have, at the moment, one 2015 loco and tender. Like you said, pulls like hell, and smooth running. I have had larger LGB locos, but I keep comming back to the smaller starter types. They are just more reliable, and less finicky, in my opinion.

I've had a few over the last fort years, inc the "growlers" very good locos and you can convert them a treat! Alyn

WOW! very nice indeed Alyn

I agree the differences are a puzzle, I have a 22150 TenderLok. So far as I can tell it has the same motor block as a Stainz but it is a hopeless puller. Even with extra weight and a motorised tender it still won't perform. It judders around curves even R3 ones. The digital starter diesel is as bad I find.

well not to be rude by being contrary

but i have 3 2015s -all older with real lead, not the newer lighter alloy

stock, the engines are not as heavy as a stainz-

from memory of my last disassembly-they do not have the larger weight in the water well as does a stainz-

so they do not have the same low center of gravity or weight right over the rear driver-but they are respectable pullers stock-but no stainz-but the connector cable makes them stall proof

and
the tenders also are not overly heavy  and certainly not as much as a stock older stainz-they have a very small metal ingot-and it rides high

but

they CAN pull really well with a bit of added weight-particularly if added as low as practicable-steam chests, side tanks, side sills etc all stuffed with lead wool or smaller lead pieces

contrary to paul-the- stainzmeister's approach-i think traction tires add a lot of pull in many situations-and i think some added weight is good but too much has to put undue strain somewhere-like the motor's commutators-but i have no evidence of this

keith -im guessing something is dirty on your loco or the brushes arent making even contact all around-should run nicely

Well my "big" engines are Stainz!!
I run a couple of Ottos and a little critter as well but the gradient climbing ability of the Stainz engines is really impressive.

Well of late I am paring down my Stainz collection and am now down to ten. but I still think they are the best pullers of the "simple" engines, (Excepting the 2095 which is THE best puller in the range) and if I just want to do the weeding or a quick evening run I always pull out the Stainz and two starter set coaches for the 1st run of the day as they always run and give the track a good scrape as well!!

Steve, never heald both a 2015 and 2020/10 in my hands at the same time, but you nailed it, the Stainz wins the weight prize!

you know those shoemas and the Davenport also are sleepers once properly weighted

i have one of the starter set cheapy new stainz (numero 3)  sans rear lighting plug
-anyone installed one??-i hope the space is there and all i ahve to do is get a plug and wire it to the block

looked it over and my first impression was -this isn't going to be that easy

No fuss, no muss... plop it on the track, open the throttle and off it goes

And they make great bashing fodder

Just use it as a freight loco, like my 1972/3 era brown cab 2020 #2 Stainz.

i have that one too-but it HAS plugs
