THE DURABLE STAINZ

I have a couple of #3 Stainz locos. I still use the old style banana plugs. So what I do is open the bottom motor cover, slip a wire between each pick up skate brass plate and the silver rod that holds it in place. Then I run the wires out the back of the motor block by making two small notches, just large enough to allow the wire to pass through. I the install a female banana plug on the end of each wire and insert the plugs into 9/64" holes I drilled in the red cross beam at the rear of the loco. Once the plugs are in place I hot glue them in place. I use these plugs to help power the loco via LGB ball bearing wheels on each car. All of the cars in a consist are plugged into one another.

It never ceases to surprise me how much of a powerhouse the LGB Stainz locos are. I have an assortment of LGB starter type locos. Both steam and diesel. However, some of the other locos, even though they may share the same motor block as the Stainz, just don't have the b'lls to pull like the Stainz.
Just an observation.

I agree the differences are a puzzle, I have a 22150 TenderLok. So far as I can tell it has the same motor block as a Stainz but it is a hopeless puller. Even with extra weight and a motorised tender it still won't perform. It judders around curves even R3 ones. The digital starter diesel is as bad I find.

Here is a clip of the digital starter set diesels with evidence to contrary http://www.youtube.com/thompo999#p/u/6/jC60LFUA8Ak
PS The train is laden as well as long

nice vid-i too love those little yellow KOFs

lots of fun and still very inexpensive

i added one screaming hot blue-white LED and one very bright red LED to my old non lighted version-those do pull well with a bit of added weight-its the end pusher for the snow plow team
