The Welshpool Narrows re-born on the WGLR.

Love this thread & the other W & L one

Just a suggestion Mel, how about another model of Armada Cottages, but in the demolished state with the whitewash showing on the tall building
as shown in Giles post #125 above the caption "This shows what had been the street side of Armada Cottages "
then you could do a before & after model pic!!!! thumbup:

You're a naughty chap Don :rolf::rolf:

As requested earlier, a video taken from on-board a train of empty goods wagons hauled by Kerr Stuart No.1. We start from platform 1 at Gooey and make our way round to the Welshpool Narrows where we stop (twice - D'oh!!) to let the guard stop the traffic in Church Street.

excellent Mel
quite an overhang of stone at one point under the decking
the 2 stops are probably prototypical - for pedestrians / animals / someone's car having to be moved, etc
:)

Yes Paul, people have remarked on that overhang before - it's nowhere near as close as it looks.

Thanks Tony. One side of the shops on Church Street are still there. The other side were demolished to make way for the new road junction seen in the photo. The red line shows where the railway used to run.

As for the info about how the railway fitted in with what Welshpool looks like now, I'm beginning to think that Giles' idea of a completely new thread might be a good idea? It seems that many of us have got plenty of pics and info that might be useful for people visiting the town and/or the modern W&L so that they can trace the railway's former route?

Looks like you need to remove your red lines from the pic Mel as they seem to be holding up the traffic :laugh:
Buildings look fantastic in place Mel very nice :thumbup:

You're right mate, still plenty to do :bigsmile:.

Like get the washing back out :bigsmile::bigsmile:
Now everybody picks up on the fact that the woman (presumably) in the end cottage always seems to have her washing out in all the photos, but if you look very carefully you might also notice that a tin bath is almost always hanging off the railings next door. Trevor recommended this place to me ;

so I sent an order off. It didn't quite go to plan thanks to the post office and the lady who runs the shop being ill, but it finally arrived today :bigsmile:.

I haven't seen a mangle in any of the photo's, but I couldn't resist it. Reminds me of being at my nan's on a Monday :love:.

the devils in the details, and its all adding cariture to the suroundings.. likes it i do:thumbup:

The wall at the rear of the goods yard and in front of Armada Cottages was temporarily made using a length of walling from the old WGLR and a couple of Tuxcraft pieces. This was getting on my nerves, so a new length of wall was required.

I made this using the same principles as the cottages (polystyrene covered in scribed tile grout), the only thing was that the long section was well over 3' long and I didn't have enough Styrofoam left over. However, I did have enough "standard" polystyrene (the white stuff used for packaging etc.), so I used that instead.

This was a good news, bad news situation. The good news was the white stuff was thicker which looked better, the bad news was that, being much less dense, the white stuff has a lot less inherent strength - the wall was decidedly wobbly until it was cemented into place. The interesting thing will be to see how well it stands up to being permanently outdoors, not only the weather, but also attention from cats, Wood Pigeons etc.? I certainly wouldn't recommend this method to people with kids, footballs etc.

The metal sign came from Back2Bay6

This has resulted in a nice little alleyway appearing in front of the cottages which runs from a gap in the buildings in Church Street. Pendlebury Lane sounds nice doesn't it?? :bigsmile:

Sounds nice? It looks brilliant! If it wasn't for the larch lap fence you could be forgiven for thinking it's 12" to the foot!
