three years into Marklin take-over and excellent LGB program 2011!

Glad to see I am not the only one who bought their first LGB starter set at an IMREX exibition in Horticultural Halls wetminster all those years ago. I still have the Stanz but am now otherwise US and still all LGB

Yes to both.

Edit - Just seen your post re: Mallet price Mike. Agree for what you get a Mallet at £500 sounds OK to me.

Agree with that mate, but it seems a shame that Marklin haven't (yet?) offered the "cheaper" end of the old LGB range such as the toy trains, Otto's etc. that would tempt the youngsters and less wealthy into the hobby. I just think that they're missing a trick that Lehmanns seemed very well aware of.

Absolutely Mike, I can live with that mate.

Re: the Mallet price. £500 for a new Mallet sounds fine to me, that's a lot of loco for the money.

Hopefully LGB will keep going for years to come but one thing is for sure is that will not dominate the Market in Europe the way they used to.

I agree with you on both counts.

Regarding pricing - V220 at Dragon - £559, USA Trains GP38 - £259. Both are very well detailed, smooth running locos that in my experience will last a long time. V200 detail is a little less fine but also a little tougher. Genrally speaking other manufacturers locos do seem to offer better value for money.

USA Trains wagons are not cheaper than LGB equivilents. When I made a close comparison a few years ago I found the USA Trains model came with metal wheels compared to plastic on LGB. The USA Trains wagon had finer, but more fragile detail. Which is best of these options is down to individual choice - there is no universal right or wrong decision.

Most USA Trains and Aristo locos run well straight out of the box and I have seen very few quality problems (although my latest USA Trains acquisition did have a loose wire but this is the first one like that).

15 years ago LGB was easily the greatest garden railway system but the competition has improved significantly over time. Now I think each of us will have our own favourites for our own reasons and no one manufacturer can be rated as the best.
