Turntable

Hey, thx for the welcome here,

Does anyone knows here a good website for how to build a turntable in G scale ? I have to build one at least 80 cm dia
to tun a bigboy 1/29.
Thx:)

If I was to build one that big, I would start with a length of glavanised electrical tray.

The only large turntables I have ever seen are commercially produced items like the Pola one....

I know Cliff George has a wonderful scratch-built automated turntable in his indoor (garage) layout, but I don't think it is designed for outdoor service. Might be good for some tips though?

Jon.

Have a look at a 'Lazy Susan' from Ikea. About a fiver last time I bought one.

If you are tempted to buy the Pola version that Gizzy mentions, just beware that they need a LOT of work and modifications to get them to work reliably (especially outdoors). Don't ask me how I know! :wits::wits::crying::crying::nail::nail::rolf::rolf:

There appears to be one on german fleabay 120 cm
euro 3500.oo

Think it can stay there as well

Sandy at DVRR has used a lazysusan like Fred suggests

By a 1:29 Big Boy I assume it's the USA Trains die cast version.
I'm unsure that some of the suggestions would cope with such a heavy beastie.
I don't know the exact weight but it's certainly a two person lift.
Surely it wouldn't fit on an 80cm dia. table, do you mean 80cm radius, 160cm dia.?

I believe there is an article in the current edition of Garden Railways on how to build a turntable, I don't know if it's for indoor or outdoor use though

Just an idea so dont all laugh...............
Why not lay a circle of R1 track then mount a lenght of Gizzys electrical trunking on a pair of bogies?? Or if you want it electric mount it on a pair of power trucks?? ;)

Thanks for your kind comments Jon.

If I can help, argilla, just let me know. As Jon said my own designed turntable was for indoor use only. Here is a pic of some of the bits I started off with, and the current state of play. Nothing much has happened for the last year or so. Mine was only 60cm diameter, 80cm sounds quite big! I've got other pics if they would help.

I would think that the Pola version isn't big enough for you, also Pola don't make it anymore, although I think you can still find it in the shops.

Good idea. I thought of doing that, but perhaps with track and power bogies from a smaller guage. Never did try it.

Yes, if the loco is as big and heavy as Neil suggests, that sounds like a great idea.

I used a 48" deck turntable outdoors, big enough for most locos, It is a tabletop outdoor cooker, 4 burners, from B & Q a few years ago. Great ball race, hardwood top and galvanised base. I sunk a hole in the layout to take it and it works great.

There was an article in Garden Railways which used a automotive water pump as a pivot, the chap blocked the water galleries off, and buried it to the correct level.
Seemed to work OK.
