Turntable

Many years ago, I built a one metre long turntable for my LGB Sumpter Valley Mallett. The basis was a stainless steel lazy susan from the States. The turntable is elevated 24 inches in height and is used purely to turn a locomotive 180 degrees. I use rail connectors to both lock the deck and to supply track power to the deck. In years of outdoor exposure it has stood the test of time.

The deck was made from aluminium extrusions found in hardware stores and was rivetted together and a timber deck overlaid for appearance.

One other option could be from a furniture manufacturer. We have a recently purchased swivel armchair which sits on a 2' diameter lazy susan type bearing.

I used a composite turntable deck combining the look of a gallows type model with the strength of a cantilever type deck. After several (many) years the turntable has now weathered to a silvery grey deck colour.

Ah, riiiiiight... so as alluded to earlier, we're talking 80cm RADIUS, not diameter!
I guess Thiel might make a bigger one to order, if you had several thousand quid/euros to spare...... ;)

Jon.

Just for general info, theugh they are not big enough for this particular case, here is Thiel's actual site - the turntables are in the "Zubehoer" section:

............ the USA Trains 1:29 Big Boy is quoted at 57" long, just under 1500mm!

In that case a 60cm wagon turntable looks as if it would just do the job!

Hey, thx for the welcome here,

Does anyone knows here a good website for how to build a turntable in G scale ? I have to build one at least 80 cm dia
to tun a bigboy 1/29.
Thx:)
We have a project to build a small batch of large (approx 1m diameter) plate girder type metal turntables for outdoor use that we hope to finish some time before the end of the present century. It keeps getting bumped by other projects, but we may be able to help you with some of the major components if that sounds useful. You are welcome to e-mail off line if you'd like to see if there's something we can help out with.

Hope that doesn't rate as a commercial announcement! But they aren't for sale yet, and won't be for ages.

Andrew

Thx for all the info here,
sorry for the error . It is a 2-8-8-2 and that's not a big boy Sorry for the mistake made by me.
I was thinking of using concrete to build the turntable. However after a night thinking it over about the building perhaps I have to use some kind of resine or plastic to build it. There is a lot of info here and I 'm still beeting around the buses or as we say ' de bomen niet meer door het bos zien" sorry I can't translat that saying.
Therefore once again I need some guilding here over the matter. Thx anyway.;)
