Richie... don't feel to bad. I sold a couple of Bmann connie tenders on LSC a couple weeks back. Got the first one packaged up, went to get the second box, turned around just in time to see the non-broken tender roll off the table and onto the floor
Have had the same happen with some USA Trains Reefers broke several strap irons :wits:

WOW Cyril looks like your GP38 has taken a real bashing :crying:
Great photo's of your fleet Chris
With your SD45 Mike i have nearly had the same happen to my GP9 i picked it up from the centre where the dynamic braking fan is clipped on :nail:
With the SD40 Spike i have also broke off the snowplow ( in the snow of all things ) have refitted it but higher up to clear the track .
My 1.20.3 stock Max has lost a few bits like you say the glad hands drop off not very well fitted on the Bachmann Stock they give you a bag of spares but never any extra glad hands .

sadly rich I sold that fa1,,,, bit gutted but I now model can pac so it didn't fit in,,,

its a good idea about a spares order! I have some 50 foot box cars missing various door handles etc!

Hi david
If your now modelling CP Steve has a USA Trains SD70 mac with Phoenix sound in CP red forsale looking for a SD70 for myself but CP is not the one for me shame as it sounds fantastic.

Hi Ian
It was your part that dropped off your GP30 that gave me the thought of the thread as every open day that I have attended has ended with some one loosing or breaking some parts of a loco just remember Dave Hubb's GP 38 & 9 dropping parts all over Chris M layout . Did check my layout after every one had left and didn't find any bits.

You have seen through my cunning plan - hold an open day and collect the free spare parts when everyone has gone home!

rich,,, I model early seventies era so its sadly too late I think,,,

shame as there vvvvery nice,,,

Never thought of that Chris:D you must have had a large collection of blue plastic parts after Dave's visit :D
Like your idea of a joint spares order :)

Even though my line's era is 1930's to early 60s I could not resist a Heritage SD70. I am also converting a SD70 into a SD50.

No parts missing yet!

Hi Mike
I see from your photo that your SD70 has lost a few parts the coupling lift bars and one air hose from the front .

Hi Richie
You are right I had totally forgotten! They came off as the loco had to plow through lumps of snow and ice that hadn't been cleared from the line. I put it away after that session along with the parts (luckily found them easily) and forgot to put them back on!
Hoisted by my own petard ....

Richie, I must try contacting their spares dept on the gladhand issue and see if I can get some. How many do you need ?
Just a little observation re this thread. After a part has been lost and retrieved does anybody go round their locos/wagons and do a little work with neatly applied appropriate adhesive to avoid reoccurences or even trouble shoot ? It took me a long time to work that one out (no, I do not normally enjoy banging my head repeatedly on a brick wall) and I still havn't got into a routine with new stock. Doh,doh, doh !
Max.

I just wanted to share a little bit of my experiences with USA Trains stuff as I can really relate to all that has been said so far! I have this problem on our line as all of our stuff, including the rolling stock, is all detailed out with train-line airhoses, lift bars and the whole works. We built our line to operate so everything must also run well too so it can be a challenge to make a detailed model which can survive in the garden environment!

One thing I did discover when kit-bashing is that if a part breaks off, try not to just glue it back on. It will just fall off in exactly the same way again as the joint is too weak. Instead try to drill and pin them back in, that way you create a much stronger, reinforced joint. Find some thin brass wire and drill the same diameter hole in both parts, then glue the wire into the end of the part to be attached. Let this dry, then do the same to attach it to the loco, that way you have the wire running through the joint too and not just the glue. It really helps to make strong fixings on what are essentially very vulnerable plastic parts. If done properly, you can often find that this new joint is far stronger than the original plastic part on it's own.

Hi Max & Gavin
I think i need 3 glad hands off my Bachmann stock 1 off a gondola and 2 off a boxcar , let me know how you get on with the spares department .
Thanks for the tips on damaged parts Gavin might have to try fitting metal wire to my USA Trains Reefer steps that keep breaking off and regluing , with all new stock that i buy i always glue on steps and fittings that are any where near the ground but many still get damaged from derailments etc .

It really work Richie! It was technique I used to use back in my teenage years when I built white metal wargamming figures, particularly the larger models which needed a lot of assembly.

Here is a quick video I found from flicking through YouTube showing the concept (my apologies, it's not great but it's the best I could find!):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQTsyEqr9tM

I know that they are making Games Workshop fantasy stuff but the concept is the same. I just use smaller gauge wire for more delicate details if necessary. On my U25B that I posted about recently, a lot of the detail was added using this technique such as the airhorns and the bell on the roof. It all helps to give them a little more strength, especially when handling the loco.

Sometimes I even put a small dab of paint on the ends of the wire and line that up on the car or loco. Once you take the part away you're left with the paint marks showing where you need to locate the corresponding drill holes.

Cheers for that Gavin will have ago at repairing the foot plate on my Bachmann 4-4-0 which i have glued several times , will glue some brass rod onto the under side of the foot plate and drill holes in the back of the loco to fix the plate onto .
