Bashing a Liliput and LGB diesel: Kof cough...

Re:Kof cough... LGB in to Liliput does go...

Engineering in plastic - impressed. You're really going to town. Like it!

Re:Kof cough... LGB in to Liliput does go...

Garry - I think it just comes down to patience and practice. Sketching ideas out helps too - and mock ups avoid expensive mistakes. Yes this seems quite a drastic bash I suppose, but really it's just an LGB cab and some plasticard on a different chassis - hopefully it'll look pretty special when it's finished though :)

Mick - thank you, yes I'm hoping to get a good level of detail so that is doesn't just look like a plasticard box with some more plasticard stuck on for doors! It's showing promise now, giving me renewed energy to continue :)

Re:Kof cough... LGB in to Liliput does go...

James,
I really like the doors and the way you have made them - I have put this thread in my useful methods favourites. I tried to give this post a 5 but I made the mistake of starting on the left and wasn't allowed to work my way further.

Same here - the doors piece is definitely a top tip
I wish I could sketch like that as well !

Re:Kof cough... LGB in to Liliput does go...

John and David - glad my testing of an idea has proved useful. I think you'd need to be careful using anything thinner than 40 thou (approx 1mm) as it would be too easy to split. Any thicker and you might not get the flexibility quite so easily...

I'm hoping to fabricate and fit some handrails on the bonnet this evening - so more soon :)

Re:Kof cough... LGB in to Liliput does go...

Maybe you can call it Crayola ;)
Lovely work James, you have the same knack for capturing the essence of a design, (rather than a caricature), as whoever wielded the rubber ruler in the lgb design office. Maybe we could inspire Rob of swift sixteen could do something along these lines to fit this cheapish chassis.

Re:Kof cough... LGB in to Liliput does go...

Paul - thank you, it's lovely to hear people think that about my bodging! :)
It's all just plastic, brass and a bit of creativity at the end of the day but it keeps me happy!

The Kof bonnet now sports a full set of handrails. The top ones are triple mounted, the middle being a cheat with superglue rather than solder, although I may strip them off and solder this connection. I also drilled out the holes to attach the side mounted headlights. Next up more Milliput on the chassis and can before the cab handrails and door handles.

Re:Kof cough... LGB in to Liliput does go...

Looking tasty James!

Re:Kof cough... LGB in to Liliput does go...

Thanks Peter - tempted to try something similar with your Liliput Davenport? :)

Re:Kof cough... LGB in to Liliput does go...

Really good. I spend too much time on repairs to kitbash, although they do change the flavor slightly.

Re:Kof cough... LGB in to Liliput does go...

That's an interesting conversion Hutch, it looks very different with disc wheels.

Although frowned upon on Home turf, it appears, even today, that shunters regularly ride on the steps of small diesel engines, including the narrow gauge, in Europe.

As my model is inspired by the Zillertal O&K I have added shunters foot boards to each corner of my model. These are 60thou plasticard, superglued to the step and the front of the buffer beam. Small strengthening fillets (as prototype) were added from 40 and 60 thou plasticard.

The Zillertalbahn also uses cable shunting to load roll-wagens. It's shunter has an additional hook on each end. I fashioned these from 60 thou plasticard, with a knife and file. They were glued to a rectangular piece of 40 thou plasticard and superglued to the bufferbeams. Bolt head detail is from styrene section.

You might also see the cab handrail holes are drilled and I've made a start on the rear headlights. I've also got bonnet door handles to add, and some hooks to the underframe which I believe are to support a spare coupling bar (for a roll-wagen). More soon...

Re:Kof cough... LGB in to Liliput does go...

Tonight I've managed to finish off fitting the handrails to the cab and bonnet of the LGB/Liliput KOF diesel shunter bash. I have also fabricated some small brackets on the drivers side of the diesel. On the prototype these are moveable so they can be pulled out to support a roll-wagen coupling bar. I've not made mine operate, but they should look good touched in red when the rest of the model is finished. I'm going to make a dummy coupling bar, but just like on the real engine, this is often stored on the bonnet footplate rather than on the brackets!

It's been a week or so since I posted last, and in that time I've only made slow progress but I have fitted the rear lights to the cab. These allow the use of the original Liliput LED lighting which keeps things simple. I have removed the raised bevel on the face of these round mouldings, and intend to turn them on my drill to put a curved edge and thin them down a bit.

So just a few more touches then before I can get a coat of primer on it and see how it's looking!

Re:Kof cough... LGB in to Liliput does go...

I'm looking forward to seeing the finished paint job.

Re:Kof cough... LGB in to Liliput does go...

Hi Paul, I'm going to paint it in EJ&KLR orange with grey chassis, red coupling rods and also with the modern logo, like on VL10, the Schoema. I've copied some elements of the Zillertalbahn livery though too, that will be included on the sheet of custom transfers.

Tonight I've applied the first coat of Halfords plastic primer to the LGB Liliput Kof Davenport bash!

It's hi-lighted a few areas needing more smoothing before I add a second coat but it's great to see it as you always get a good feel for the finished model.

Re:Kof cough... LGB in to Liliput does go...

Ooh thats looking good James :thumbup:

Re:Kof cough... LGB in to Liliput does go...

Thanks chaps - I'm really please with how the rear of the cab has turned out, you can't tell it had 3 massive lamps, a waist band and other raised detail at all now :)

Re:Kof cough... LGB in to Liliput does go...

Like it very much James.... I love when I add the first coat of primer to a model, even though it shows up those little problems the whole thing comes together for the first time to me with that coat of paint.
