Bashing a Liliput and LGB diesel: Kof cough...

Re:Kof cough... LGB in to Liliput does go...

Thanks to Steve at Narrow Planet (www.narrowplanet.co.uk) my custom etched works plates (the large rectangles on the small nickel silver fret in the first picture), the etched grill surround and the pressed steel number plates have arrived. The number plates read 'Helli 1' on the prototype, mine are tweaked for my daughters benefit!

The grill surround is absolutely spot on, I'm looking forward to cracking back on with the project now!

Re:Kof cough... LGB in to Liliput does go...

Thanks Paul, some small bonnet details and then I can add a second coat of primer, before the fun of the paintwork begins! :)

Re:Kof cough... LGB in to Liliput does go...

Now sporting matt white on the body and bufferbeams as an undercoat for the yellow on the buffer beam (ahead of masking the striping) and orange body-shell...

Re:Kof cough... LGB in to Liliput does go...

Tonight I sprayed the gloss yellow paint on the bufferbeams (to be masked as stripes) and the cab sides (to be masked for warning messages). I used my airbrush again but as it was damp I only risked spraying the flat wagon brown, as the moisture filter was getting quite wet. The satin green for the coaches can wait for another day!

What I'm very happy with is that in the kitchen lighting you can see the pressed steel effect is still showing through on the bonnet doors!

Re:Kof cough... LGB in to Liliput does go...

Slow and steady wins the day so another night and another colour. First I masked off the cab sides though, as there will be warning stickers because of the engines remote control capability (as per the Zillertal prototype). These were done using B&Q premium masking tape, a glass clip frame and a metal rule.

The Humbrol gloss orange was lightly thinned and applied by airbrush in two light coats. What I like is how it hi-lights the creases on the panels on the bonnet doors, less happy with how it hi-lights the imperfections where I've not quite smoothed after filling or removing the original moulded detail!

Next up will be grey, and masking will involve the bonnet so I can do the grill, and the bufferbeams so I can do the chevrons. Then transfers, detail painting, varnish, etched plates and assembly!

Re:Kof cough... LGB in to Liliput does go...

Well t-dah - here she is, all painted up now waiting detail painting and transfers before varnishing! I'm very happy with how the wasp stripes turned out - masked in my normal way...

It was brilliant removing the tape to see how she turned out...

Re:Kof cough... LGB in to Liliput does go...

Well yes it might have been more sensible to do the detail painting, then the transfers but hey ho I was impatient, so tonight out came the Microsol and tweezers and the custom transfers I had made a few months ago were applied! I think it's looking great and can't wait to finish it off now!

Re:Kof cough... LGB in to Liliput does go...

Thanks Paul - it's not varnished yet, it will be once the handrails are painted. The gloss paint makes transfers stick better - but it will be a nice dull satin (like the rest of my stuff) when finished :)

Re:Kof cough... LGB in to Liliput does go...

With the fine weather this evening I fired up the airbrush and applied a coat of Humbrol enamel satin varnish (the one in the tin). It's gone on well and I can't wait to let it harden over night so I can start to re-assemble her properly, fit the glazing, paint the cab details etc this week...

and here she is with Elly's Stainz - I used the satin varnish to blend in the new transfers. I think you'd be hard pushed to tell it was a starter set engine now!

Re:Kof cough... LGB in to Liliput does go...

I've re-assembled the diesel shunter VL2 this evening, after painting the cab details. I also fitted a fire extinguisher but annoyingly you can hardly see this! The LED lighting is also fitted, but I need to solder jump wires to connect up the rear ones. I hope to give it a test tomorrow, and if all goes well then I will attach the body to the chassis!

Re:Kof cough... LGB in to Liliput does go...

Well apart from a few detail parts and a touch of weathering around the exhaust at some point the LGB Liliput Kof / Dieselok V3 bash is finished. The body is attached to the chassis (I cheated and glued it) and the box is modified so that it fits snugly for transport.

Re:Kof cough... LGB in to Liliput does go...

Well finished James. Looks a world away from the basic model.

Re:Kof cough... LGB in to Liliput does go...

That's a handsome locomotive that you have created there James that would look fine on anyone's line another super job :thumbup::thumbup:

Re:Kof cough... LGB in to Liliput does go...

Garry, Alan - thanks!

I know Bachmann/Liliput offered their Europeanised version of the Davenport, but I do wonder if anyone there considered a new body. The chassis is an excellent performer - and my model shows what a transformation is possible.

I'll be over on the EJ&KLR again in a few weeks, I'll get some photos of it with other stock so you can see how small it is in reality! Hopefully I'll have finished a few other repaints by then too, and possibly finished off these detailing bits (coupling bar, re-railer, tool box).

Re:Kof cough... LGB in to Liliput does go...

Very impressive sir. That is an exceptional creation. I got my son a davenport to upgrade from his thomas characters, but now I wish I had one for a project similar to this, with the end result a little engine that looks like the Strasburg's Plymouth (Strasburg #1) with siderods.

Thanks for the inspiration to go after this once my other projects are done.

Re:Kof cough... LGB in to Liliput does go...

To close this thread it's always nice to see a creation in action, so to speak, so I've copied over the relevant photos from my Garden Railway thread (http://www.gscalecentral.net/The-EJKLR-Austrian-narrow-gauge-in-Cheshire-m107675-p25 < Link To http://www.forum.gscalece...shire-m107675-p25 for more general shots).

Yes, there are a few details I'd like to add, and I wish the satin varnish had been a touch more glossy, but it looks great out on the line and is so silent compared to the bigger LGB engines. It's a delight to operate...

Here are a few shots comparing it's size with an LGB Schoema starter set diesel that has also been repainted and detailed. This is supposed to represent an EJ&KLR mainline diesel.
