Coupling Types

What are the going prices for Loop & Hooks, Bachmann, and Aristo, Knuckle couplers ?
I might part with a few... if you guys can afford the shipping from Canada.

Fred, depending on postage,it may well be an offer I can't refuse.

I guess this would be an opportune time to introduce newer members to an article I wrote many years ago on modifying LGB couplings to magnetic operation.

MODIFYING STANDARD LGB COUPLINGS.pdf

Dear Sir

Thank you very much for this brilliant article. I have taken the liberty to download it.
Without starting a new debate this is exactly what I have been looking for. At my indoor layout my grandchildren likes just to run longer trains arond and around meaning double hook as a security, but when alone I'm totally into shunting - both Ingelnooks and Timesavers and shuntingpuzzles from old MR magazines - and for that purpose double hooks is a bit annoying. And will not allow pushing "loose" cars.

Hopefully theese genius couplings are still available somewhere on the net.

Sincerely
Ole O.

The only option I can think of for your Shunting and Kids would be to have 2 sets of stock with differing Coupling Types. KD would then be the thing for your shunting puzzles, but that would of course involve lots of expence. But if you do like most of us have a surfeit of stock it may well be the answer.

Sure, and I will go for 2 sets of rolling stock. I'm rather new in G-scale and do not have that much waggons (17 pcs.).
Originally the G-scale trains was intended for the grandchildren only (to save my fine scale HO models until they get older)
It is mostly used LGB ToyTrain and PlayMobil, but my old modelbuilder heart got hit.
So now I am beginning to collect more expensive pieces and has also started scratchbuilding again.
And these "better" stock should be fitted with a shunting friendly coupling.

At the weekend I completed some more track-work (pictures to follow) and as is my norm I put my little "Otto" test loco around to ensure no issue, and had it pull a couple of trucks up the gradient. Weather was nice so out came the Backman, and a coach or two, so what has this to do with coupling types:
The LGB couplings may not look prototype as much as the Backman ones do, however unless the Backman coupling is in near 100% perfect condition, then uncoupling takes place on a regular basis, LGB maybe slight harder to "manually" uncouple, but this is the way to go.
I understand that Backman do the hook and bar as a spare, but my second-hand stock did not come with any, so now on the look out for hook and bar couplings.

I am with Phill and Gizzy, for ease of use and cost LGB have worked well for me over 20 years or just under now. Have investigated others but they are either too expensive and not right for my German Theme (Kaydee), Choppers or some other 16mm Types like Chain or Pin and Bar both too fiddly. Have used all those except Kaydee in this scale. So I stick with LGB and just live with the looks of them.

I suspect that Jimmy will be buying more stock with LGB type couplings than other types so perhaps the logic of them will work for him as it has for me.

Hi
As I mentioned earlier, I have stuck with LGB (and LGB style) couplings because I enjoy shunting operations and need something reliable which is easy to couple and uncouple. However, because they look unprototypical and somwhat intrusive, I have been experimenting with making a less prominent alternative. As I have over 70 items of stock I need something cheap and also compatible with existing LGB couplings so I can replace them over time.

Just in case you haven't seen it, there's more info in this thread - Replacements for LGB couplings - G Scale Central

I've just about perfected my system and have equipped a dozen items of stock with the new coupling and successfully run a couple of full operating sessions with the mix of couplings. If you look closely, you can see some of the new couplings in my latest running session video.
