EJ&KLR LGB Schoema detailing...

The EJ&KLR is, in my mind, a little slice of Austria in my garden (well Mum's garden). I have been inspired by a lot of different narrow gauge lines across the country - but namely the Steyrtalbahn, Ybbstalbahn and Waldviertelbahn.

However, those three lines were all nationalised and operated by OBB through to either closure or preservation. One company that still operates narrow gauge lines in Austria through the last century is the StLB. It is this line that most inspires my eclectic collection of repainted and bashed LGB stock if I'm honest.

With that in mind I have been toying with the idea of portraying the EJ&KLR in the 1980s. Now obviously I could do the obvious simple conversion of the LGB V51/V52 diesel - but this is quite a big machine, and a little out of keeping with my other steam locomotives. The StLB actually made extensive use of a small fleet of diesel electric locomotives, that visually have more in common with the starter set Schoema...

Hence a plan was hatched - and I've now got my hands on an example to base my conversion upon. This first post is just the back-story, a list of my plans if you like. I don't expect to get started with this project in earnest for a few months as I've got the Roll-wagen to finish first :)

The plan is to detail and repaint the Schoema - nothing too drastic. I'll replace the moulded handrails and then repaint in a reddy orangey colour (similar to the Zillertalbahn and later StLB red). I've also designed some custom transfers for the cabside already, and will look into getting the works plates etched in nickel silver. The chassis will be sprayed dark grey and the roof will probably be black.

So, here she is before I start - and here also is the proposed EJ&KLR logo - this is inspired by the StLB logo - and will be Black and White on the Schoema rather than Black and Orange.

What about looking at the LGB model of the 2091 class loco James?

These were really a 1-Bo-1 and effectively a 0-4-0 shunter with a luggage compartment in the second taller bonnet.

They were woefully underpowered for most trains, although the LGB version has plenty of grunt, due to it having 2 motors....

Gizzy, in Austria, as you say they were underpowered. Basically a development of the 2090 diesel used on the Ybbstalbahn. They were exclusively used by the OBB - it wasn't until the late 1990s that they became used by some of the other private companies. The StLB does not operate any - still relying on these diesel electrics along with a Polish diesel hydraulic I believe.

As a model, the LGB is a nice example - but big, long and a lot more expensive!

Like the look of the inspiration. I've just caught up with the December C. Modeller so look forward to seeing this conversion unfold in time.

Basically a development of the 2090 diesel used on the Ybbstalbahn
The class 2091 (originally class 2041) was a development of the class 2190 (originally class 2040) diesel of which three were built. The class 2040 and 2041 creating a production build of 15 examples of diesel-electric in total with the same type of V8 engine. It wasn't developed from the class 2090 which was a petrol-electric and originally built for the Zillertalbahn, only one being built.
The 2040 proved to be a good locomotive for the time and the proposed order for a fleet of 15 was ammended to incorporate a baggage compartment in a similar idea to the standard gauge DT1 (Dorf Trottel / Village Idiot) which later became class 3071.

Vasim - that's interesting, I didn't have my books to hand. I've a book (in german, which I can't read that well) that gave me the impression that the 2091 was a development of the 2090... (this engine)...

For those interested Schmalspurig durch Osterreich, it lists (under the BBO) the type 2040 (later 2190 as you say) as 2040.01 to 03 and type 2041 (later 2091) as 2041.01 to 07. These later became 2190.01 to 03 and 2091.01 to 12.

I've started work on this model now - as a break from the more involved 009 projects, and the Roll-wagen.

First night I carved off all the plastic handrails and handles and have replaced them with 0.9mm brass wire - already a big improvement. I have also started work on the artwork for the transfers, and have spoken with Steve at Narrow Planet about getting some custom Schoema plates made up, but the more modern ones.

Currently pondering on colour, and whether to go for a rich bright red (like the new DB Schenker colour), or a orangey red (like the old Canadian Pacific diesels with the black and white multimark on)... However, I'm skint until next months so that and the primer will have to wait until I have some cash.

Keep it coming James- those handrails look a tidy job. Watching a schoema on ebay.de but just blown some cash on a coop container wagon. Mrs B yet to find out.......

Those handrails look great! Where did you get the brass wire from please, I would like to give mine a smartening up too.

I get all my metal and plastic material from Eileen's Emporium.
I think the 0.9mm brass rod translates to 3/8" rod.

Actually more like 1/32" or so....... 3/8" is not far short of a half-inch, almost enough for a handrail on the real thing.... ;)

Jon.

Vasim, that's the Hungarian diesel right? I'm going to go for a dark grey chassis as green doesn't feature in my EJ&KLR modern image livery but thanks for sharing that photo...
Yes the OBB jaffa colour would be suitable - I need to see if I can find something close in the ranges made by Humbrol and Railmatch (enamels) in the UK for ease of sourcing.

Those locos were sourced from Yugoslavia / built by Djuro-Djakovic during 1970 to 1972. There are three in Austria - StLB own VL22 (previously 740-023) and VL23 (previously 740-024) while the Zillertalbahn own D10 (previously 740-007). All three arrived in Austria in 1980.
The Zillertalbahn D10 has been rebuilt and re-engined with a local Jenbacher engine but the StLB pair are basically just repainted and pressed straight into service still with their original MTU engines.

In the first post I showed the proposed 'modern image' EJ&KLR logo - well I've been spending some time knocking up some more custom artwork for the transfers, and as usual got John at www.precisionlabels.co.uk to print me them - fantastic job as usual and turned around in less than 3 days upon receipt of my artwork and payment.

Anyway - it's quite a big sheet but only cost my £10 - there are enough on here for 5 projects (if you want to know the others take a look at my blog!) This thread is about the Schoema though so here you can see them mocked up against the cab. The Schoema will be getting the two colour logos, and some white numbers and smaller details for the cab sides as well. I've also commissioned Steve at www.narrowplanet.co.uk to do some custom Schoema works plates.
