First Sighting Of New Version Feldbahn Steamer (lgb)?

Jon you've killed me - I've caved - I bought the O&K and the set of four wagons, delivered to the UK for £220ish - which seemed a bargain.
I used www.modellbahnshoplippe.com as over 100eur it's free European delivery.
Don't expect these to stay pristine for long - and when the Deutz is available I'll pick that up too :)
Now where can I get some larger (1:18 rather than the usual LGB 1:22) figures from?

"Four wheel drive" via gearing would certainly be the best option.....

Yes, and I think that's what we had all assumed or hoped for - but the new instruction leaflet doesn't seem to support that. I will be out all day tomorrow when mine is supposed to be delivered, but hopefully it will be taken in by our neighbours and I'll pick it up on my return - so I should know the truth by tomorrow evening!

Jon.

well, if both axels are properly driven, im on for at least 1, maybe two.

I have three of the blue decoder jonny locos, all of mine have plastic rods, go figure.

Well, all I can add is the new models have a different motor to the older Feldbahn loks.. The new will not fit the old model.
So......
The 'new' engineering could just be to make the new motor fit??

James, are you living in the States at the moment ? I see your country flag suggests it.

No I think it's the fact the work server is routed through the states! I'm still in the UK... I did wonder the same when I first saw the new forum format.

Well, sorry chaps, I can't answer the questions tonight..... ParcelFarce failed to deliver it today, despite the tracking system showing that it arrived in the UK last night..... given the Bank Hol and stuff, I probably won't see it till Monday now, so we'll all have to wait a few more days for the solution to the big mystery!

We're very close to answering the question - because my loco has just arrived, delivered NOT by ParcelFarce but by our regular RM Postie!

I've just opened the box - it's a lovely little thing, just as cute as it ever was, but with some of the "bling" toned down just a little - some of the pipework is now painted in copper and gold tones rather than being actual bright plated plastic. Now, I've not yet opened the gearbox (think I ought to test it the rollers before I start taking anything apart) BUT I've had a good look through the little manual leaflet, and here is the interesting thing.... the exploded diagram on P.10 of the actual leaflet is NOT the same as that in the PDF version linked to in post 5 above, which seems to be incorrect!
The real leaflet shows a part that is not on the PDF, labelled as part 19, "Zwischenwelle" - which translates as "intermediate shaft" according to Google - and is shown on the drawing as what looks like a lengthways driveshaft between the two axles with a bevel gear on each end!

More news (and a photo) when I get round to physically opening the gearbox, but for now it looks as if M/LGB have been sensible about it and have installed a driveshaft between the axles!

TA-DAAAAAH! :)

The long standing mystery is now revealed!

The new drive mechanism in all its glory.....
On left, an old-type Feldbahn mechanism fully stripped-down, showing the old drive belt and the old style motor; on right, the new loco with just the baseplate removed, clearly showing the new metal driveshaft (with black plastic bevel gearing) in place of the belt, plus a completely new-type motor (labelled "Maerklin"). The old and new motors are definitely NOT interchangeable! However I do think it may be possible to directly replace the whole old type gearbox assembly with the new one.....

Then, the cosmetic detail differences between the old (left) and new (right) loco bodies - note the painted rather than plated pipework and generally toned-down brightwork on the new one - though I have to say, I think I rather prefer the lined cab and brass-rimmed spectacle plates on the old version!

I have to agree, the old aesthetics are more pleasing. However, I have never been a fan of the bulbous stacks.

The stack just screws in, so they are completely interchangeable. I also have an old-type black version with the straight stack.

I have to say, as my old green one in the pictures has been in bits for a couple of years now (one day I'll have time to finish a project...), I'm almost tempted to mix-and-match parts of the old and new locos to end up with a hybrid model using the cab and boiler of the old one on the new chassis and black footplate of the new! ;)

Jon.

I too have the black version with the straight stack. Still in it's box. It was test run for a few minutes and stored until that day when I build my indoor layout.

Interesting and thanks for posting details of the new mechanism.

On the only two I've seen that failed it was the axle mounted gear that meshed with the motor that was the problem. I hope this has been improved as part of the redesign..

I have had a considerable mileage out of Feldbahn locos at shows & found them very good natured. Quite happy pulling 6 Grizzly Flats coaches for hours. The only actual failure was a motor which decided it needed several amps to go around. This was exchanged FOC by Peter Skinner.

I have bought several which had been buggered by previous owners. I bought one which had been fitted with traction tyres. A nice engineering job but useless on a SWB loco. A new set of wheels was called for. I also bought a faulty Chloe, the motor was spinning around & the gear wheel had practically no teeth. A definite case of misuse. A replacement axle (from the one with tyres) & a bit of packing under the motor that is now as good as new.

Chloe and Olomana on my line have both had the stupid plastic trailing wheels replaced with metal feldbahn wheels, with pickups added using Bachmann roller-bullets (as used on their Davenport). This had made them lovely runners, no stalling over any pointwork even at a crawl
